'A Wedge Between Friends

The sound of the gunfire startled the four people as they hiked through the San Gabriel National Park.  John Gage, Roy, Chris, and Jennifer DeSoto were taking a day trip through this park.  It was going to be the last time the four could do so.

Jennifer was accepted at an East Coast college and was going to be leaving the nest to attend school at Boston University.  Chris, now 21, was attending a community college.  Although he didn't know what he wanted to study, his father insisted that he go to college.

Roy and Johnny continued to be paramedic partners at station 51.  Not only were they the longest practicing paramedics in LA county, they were partners the entire time.

"Get down!" Johnny yelled as another gunshot went off.  He instinctively covered Jennifer's body with his own.  Roy covered Chris' body as the shots continued.  The two groups lay twenty feet apart.  No one moved.

"Dad, who could be shooting at us?"  Chris asked.

"I don't know son, maybe it's deer poachers." Roy answered softly as he placed his hand protectively over his son's head.

Jennifer was softly sobbing.  She didn't think Johnny heard her or he'd be talking to her, to calm her down.

After fifteen minutes, although it seemed longer, Roy determined the gunfire risk was over.  He popped his head up.

"Chris, are you okay?" His father asked.

"Just scared, dad, that's it."  Roy looked at his son, who was no longer, a child.  Chris had JoAnne's features and Roy's build.

"Lemme help you up, Chris."  Roy reached for his son's hand and pulled him up.

They walked toward Johnny and Jennifer who were still idle.

"I think the coast is clear, Johnny."  Roy said as he approached his friend and daughter.

When Johnny didn't move.  Roy repeated his statement. "Johnny. I think the coast is clear," he said raising his voice.

Jennifer tried to move, but couldn't under Johnny's weight. "Daddy, Johnny's not moving!"  Jennifer sobbed.

Roy and Chris picked up their pace. "Jenny, don't move.  Let me check on Johnny first."  Roy grew concerned as he neared the two.  He crouched down and saw a blood stain on Johnny's shirt.  He lifted Johnny's hand and felt a weak pulse. "Oh shit!"  Roy said.  "Chris, you have the first aid kit.  Let me have it."

Chris gave the kit to his dad then knelt down besides him.  To most, the sight of blood would be scary, but not Chris.  Although he was taking classes at the community college, he decided that after he got his associates degree, he was going to become a firefighter and then a paramedic.  He wanted to follow in his father's footsteps.

Roy took the scissors out from the kit and slowly cut away the back of Johnny's shirt.  Jennifer was watching her father's expression with growing fear.  As Roy exposed Johnny's flesh, he discovered a bullet entered Johnny's back just above his hip and off to the left of the spine. Roy looked up and saw Chris staring at him.  "Chris, I need to brace Johnny's back, like a backboard.  Go find me branches that are about five feet long."  Roy didn't have to ask twice.  Chris bounded off and looked for the tree limbs.

"Jenny, are you okay?  Are you hurt anywhere?"  Roy asked.

"No daddy, but I'm scared."

Roy took his daughter's hand and squeezed it.  "I know sweetheart."  Roy went back to examining Johnny.  He saw another bullet hole in Johnny's pant leg.  He cut away the material and saw that a bullet entered and exited Johnny's calf.  Judging by the size of the wound, it was a small caliber bullet.

Roy took the bandages out from the kit and pressed them on the wound.  Johnny started to stir.  He opened his eyes and saw he was looking at Jennifer's face.  Jenny saw the movement and made eye contact with him.

In a weakened voice, Johnny said, "Hi Angel.  What happened?"

Before Jennifer had a chance to answer, Roy cut in. "You've been shot in the back and the leg, Johnny.  I'm doing what I can.  We're gonna make a backboard and lift you off of Jenny.  Then, I'm gonna go for help.  How are you feeling?"

In a troubled voice Johnny replied, "Roy, I don't feel a thing."  Then he swallowed and closed his eyes.  Jennifer moved her eyes from Johnny and looked at her father.  She saw fear on his face.   It was something in all her eighteen years that she never saw before.

Chris came back with the branches.  The two were able to fashion a mock backboard.  They gently moved Johnny off of Jennifer and lay him on his stomach.  Roy took off his jacket and rolled it into a pillow for Johnny's head.  Then he looked at the wound and saw that it stopped bleeding.  He took Johnny's vitals and shook his head.

Jennifer stretched after having the weight removed from her.  She saw blood on her clothing; blood belonging to Johnny.  After working out the kinks, she sat down next to the unconscious Johnny, holding his hand.

"Chris, Jenny, I'm gonna hike back to the station and get help.  Chris, I want you to start a fire.  You've got to keep Johnny warm.  I'll be back as soon as I can, but it will be dark.  Don't let Johnny move.  Talk to him and let him see you. That will comfort him."

"Okay dad," both kids replied together.  Roy walked over to both of them and hugged them.

Roy looked around one last time.  He bent down to his injured friend, "Johnny, I don't know if you can hear me, but I'm gonna get help.  You've got Chris and Jenny here with you.  Hang in there Junior."

After saying that, Roy got up and with one last look over his shoulder, walked briskly  back to the Ranger's station.

The narrow gravel road winded its way through the tall thick forest. What started out as a brisk walk soon turned into a jog for Roy? The only way he could find any solace was by  talking to himself. "Junior you have to be okay. I don't want to lose you. Just hang on my friend. I'll get you help and get you to Rampart as quickly as possible."

With his thoughts wrapped up on getting Johnny help and hoping his friend to be okay, Roy mis
sed seeing a rock that protruded through the road. Tripping, he landed hard onto his left knee tearing the material of his jeans and scrapping and tearing his flesh leaving tiny bits of gravel embedded into the tissue. He screamed in pain, cursing himself.  With the discomfort searing through his body Roy hadn't noticed that his hands were also torn and scraped from the fall. Precariously, with his sore hands, Roy examined his knee. Blood slowly trickled down his leg and soaked into the material of his jeans from a large jagged laceration extending the length of his kneecap. Ripping a piece of cloth from his shirt, Roy wrapped the wound to prevent any further blood loss or damage. Taking a deep breath, ignoring the throbbing pain, Roy gingerly pulled himself back to his feet. "I can't stop," he said to himself. "Johnny needs me."

The first steps were more like limps as Roy continued his journey toward the Ranger's station. He looked around for a tree limb to use to help support his weight.  He felt nauseous.  He took a deep breath, swallowed the bile that threatened the back of his throat. Roy pushed forth. Sweat collected on his brow dripping down his face. Not thinking, Roy swiped at the moisture with his hand. A new agonizing pain shot through his body as the salty residue seeped into the tears on his palms. The overall pain was too much. Roy's stomach rebelled. He bent over and retched all that was in him then continued with the dry heaves for several minutes afterwards. Once Roy regained control, he cursed and chastised himself, "Stupid, Roy. Johnny and the kids need you. You're gonna have to be more careful if you're gonna do any of them any good."

Taking several deep breaths, Roy continued as quickly as his injured knee would allow him. Finally with the Ranger station in view, Roy quickly hobbled across the small parking lot and into the building. Inside the doorway, he tumbled onto the floor. One of the rangers quickly ran to his side. Alarmed, the man beckoned the other two members inside the cabin to aid the fallen man. Roy opened his eyes and gripped onto the tan uniform shirt of the ranger kneeling next to him. Taking a deep breath, he relayed his need for help. "I'm a paramedic with the LACo fire department. My partner and my kids are several miles up the trail. Some unknown person shot my partner in the back and the leg. He needs help immediately," Roy choked out.

The ranger then yelled to another man to call for a squad and medical airlift. "Just relax," he said. "We'll take care of your kids and your partner. I also think, judging by the looks of you that you'll need some medical help too."

Roy smiled, breathed a sigh of relief, closed his eyes, and then broke down, fearing the worst for his partner.

"Jenny, I'm gonna get stuff for a fire.  Stay with Johnny."

Jennifer nodded as Chris went off to find wood.

Jennifer held Johnny's hand and squeezed it.  She started to reminisce about all the times they played together while she was growing up.  Although Johnny was always a fixture at the DeSoto's household, Jenny saw less of him as she entered her teen years.  She'd only see him at family meals as she now hung out with her friends.  Tears rolled down her face.

"What's the matter Angel?"  Johnny whispered, hearing Jenny's sobs.

Stunned by hearing Johnny's voice, Jenny cleared the tears off her face.  She bent down so her face was close to his.  She never let go of his hand. "Uncle Johnny, I'm so scared."

Johnny gave Jenny the best Gage grin he could muster.  "I'm scared too, Angel."  He paused, took a deep breath, closed his eyes briefly and shuddered.  Jennifer took her jacket off and placed it over her Uncle. Then she whispered into Johnny's ear, "Chris went to get wood to build a fire."

"I hope he doesn't burn down the forest."  Johnny said choking out half a laugh as he grimaced.

"Are you okay, Johnny?"  Jennifer asked with concern.

"What happened to me Jenny?" he asked.

"You were shot, Uncle Johnny. Dad went for help," she answered. Jennifer closed her eyes. After a brief silence she leaned into Johnny and whispered,  "Johnny, I don't want anything to happen to you.  I love you."

Johnny moved his head slightly and made eye contact with Jennifer.  "I love you too, Angel."  He gave her hand a squeeze just before the darkness closed in on him.

Chris came back to find his sister sitting next to Johnny softly crying.  He approached. "What's wrong Jenny?" he asked. Jenny looked up at her brother. "I'm scared Chris. I'm scared for Uncle Johnny."

Chris took Jenny's hand pulling her to her feet. Chris moved the hair off of his sister's face. "Jenny, he'll be okay.  You know Johnny's got nine lives."  Chris said to boost his own fears.  After giving his sister a hug, Chris kneeled down next to Johnny and took his pulse and respiration. He noted them on the log his father had started using Johnny's favorite green pen. Once finished, Chris then cleared an area and started a campfire. While Chris readied the fire, Jenny resumed her vigil next to Johnny's side holding his hand and stroking his head.

A wisp of smoke assaulting Johnny's nostrils pulled him awake. Opening his eyes, he became aware that Jenny was by his side, caressing his head. "That feels good, Angel," Johnny whispered. Glancing over, he saw Chris working on the campfire.  "I see Chris has got the fire going."

"Shh Johnny.  You need to rest," Jenny Ann cooed.  Jenny locked eyes with Johnny. She could tell he that he was scared. Brushing a stray lock of hair away from his eyes, she leaned in and whispered into Johnny's ear, "I'll be here for you Johnny, now and always."  She said as she squeezed his hand.

A tear rolled out of Johnny's eyes before he closed them again.

*******

The damage the bullet caused ended Johnny's career as an active firefighter/paramedic.  After months of rehabilitation, Johnny was able to walk again using a cane to balance his limp.  He was offered a job as head of the Paramedic training program; a job he gratefully accepted. He was pleased that he could teach new, incoming paramedics his skills.

Without Johnny as his partner, Roy moved on up in the Department.  He took the Captain's exam and passed it.  Within months of that horrible day, Roy DeSoto became Captain DeSoto.

Chris completed his stint at junior college and applied to the fire academy, much to his father's dismay.  He was accepted and began his training as a firefighter/paramedic.

Jennifer wanted to reapply to college on the west coast, but her parents would not allow her to miss out on the opportunity of receiving a full scholarship to the five-year nursing program at BU.  She reluctantly left without saying goodbye to Johnny.

Five years later….

Johnny Gage sat at his desk staring at a framed picture in his hand. He was thinking about the phone call he just received from his best friend, Roy DeSoto.  It was several weeks since the two poke.  Both were consumed with a heavy workload that took time away from their social lives.  Roy, Captain of Station 45's A-shift, and Johnny, head of the Paramedic Training program, were left with little time to get together.  They always made an exception when it came to celebrating birthdays, holidays, and special occasions together. It was a special occasion that generated the phone call.

Jennifer graduated from nursing school.  She was now 23 years old and a young woman. After writing her California state exam, Jenny was fortunate enough to be hired by Rampart. She would be able to work at her dad's and Johnny's old stomping grounds.

Johnny had thought the world of Roy's little girl ever since the day Roy had introduced his family to him back in 1972, shortly after they became partners in the Paramedic program.

Johnny ran his fingers over the picture in the silver frame he held in his hands. It was the first picture Roy gave him of Jennifer. She was only 4 years old. She looked like a little doll with long golden hair in ringlets.

'It's so hard to believe that you're all grown up now. It seems like only yesterday that your Daddy brought me home and I met you for the first time.'

Johnny then picked up the other photo off his desk with Jennifer's latest picture in it. It was taken during her birthday party in April 1991. She was just breath taking, or so Johnny thought. She had developed into a beautiful young woman.

'And now you are all finished with nursing school. This is a certainly a very special occasion.'

Johnny always liked both of Roy's children, but Chris being a boy outgrew the hugs from his Uncle Johnny. He was a man then and wanted to be treated as such.  But Jennifer always loved the special attention that her Uncle Johnny bestowed on her.

The graduation took place in Boston. JoAnne and Roy flew cross-country to attend.  They planned a family celebration once everyone returned to Los Angeles.

Johnny had plenty of time to have his best suit dry-cleaned and get a haircut.  Nothing but the best for his Angel, Jennifer. He was going to wear his darker gray suit with a white shirt and a tie that was a few shades dark gray than his suit, with thin red, white and black diagonal strips on it.

Friday night arrived and Johnny pulled up in front of the DeSoto's home.  He slowly got out of his Rover pulling his cane out with him.  Once he was steady on his feet, he reached back inside his Rover and pulled out a box of long-stemmed red roses for the special lady of the evening. The roses smelled like raspberries and were Jennifer's favorite flower and color.

Johnny had to chuckle thinking about the flowers as he walked toward the house. It seemed a little bit funny to him that over the years he knew all of Jennifer's favorite things, and he remembered every one of them.

Before Johnny reached the door, it swung open wide. Jennifer, wearing a form fitting silk black dress, was the first one to greet Johnny. She opened her arms wide for him. In the past, Johnny would have scooped Jennifer up, but his injury prevented him from doing so now.  So he surrendered to just a hug.

Roy was right behind his daughter with a huge smile spread across his face. He took the awkward box from Johnny's hands. He was pleased to see his friend again. They hadn't been able to see one another for several weeks because of their work.  With outstretched hands the two gripped on for a firm handshake, just as Johnny released Jennifer from their hug. "It's been too long," Roy said.

"Agreed Pally," Johnny replied as he gripped onto his friend in a bear hug.

"Okay you two. How about we allow Johnny inside?" Joanne affirmed as she approached the door.

Pulling away from his best friend, Johnny greeted JoAnne, placing a kiss on her cheek.

"I'm so glad you were able to make it tonight," JoAnne said.

Johnny smiled then gave her a squeeze. "I wouldn't have missed this night, JoAnne. Not for anything." Johnny uttered before he hobbled inside the house. "Is Chris goin' to be here tonight?" Johnny asked making his way to the sofa.

"He'll be here later. He was able to get off work for a few hours for dinner at least."

"So how's he doing anyway?"

"Well, Johnny, maybe you could tell us, considering you're his boss and all," Roy stated with a grin.

"Funny Roy, real funny. Now you know that's not what I mean. I know he's doing a great job with the program. Kind of like a chip off the old block." Johnny said laughing as he pointed to Roy.  "After all, he is the son of one of the best Paramedic's LACo has ever had."

"Former Paramedic Johnny, former."

"Yeah but if I know you Roy, I'll bet you gave him a few lessons before he had to prove himself to me."

Roy winked at Joanne. "I guess Johnny knows me better than I thought."

"Of course he does, Roy. How else would you two have made the best Paramedic team in the County?  Now how about we all sit for a few minutes before we leave for the restaurant."

Roy held out the box. "Who are these for?" he asked.

"They are for the lady of the evening," he said taking the box that Roy handed him. "Here you go Angel. These are for you."

Excitedly, Jennifer took the box and quickly undid the ribbon holding it closed. As she tipped the lid off the box, the aroma of the roses hit full force. Jennifer took a deep breath of the heavenly fragrance. Then she looked into Johnny's dark brown eyes with a huge smile on her face. "They are beautiful Johnny. They are so beautiful." Jenny leaned over and gave Johnny a quick kiss on his cheek before she motioned for her mother to help put the flowers in a vase.

"Anything for my Angel." Johnny replied.

While the ladies retreated to the kitchen to tend to the roses, Roy took a seat across from his friend in the living room.

"How have you been Roy?"

"Can't complain. How about you?  How's your back and leg?"

"I've had better days, but then I've had worse days too.  I can predict when it's gonna rain,"  Johnny said. Then he quickly changed the subject, not wanting to remember that fateful day.  "You know, it's funny how fast the kids seem to have grown up." Johnny said looking in the direction of the kitchen.

"Believe me I know. It seems like only yesterday she was just a little baby. Now she's a nursing school graduate and next week she begins work at Rampart. And since the topic of babies has come up, when are you going to settle down and have a couple of your own?"

Johnny laughed. "Well Roy, I think I'm getting a bit too old to play the role as a father. Besides, I really don't think there is a woman out there that would have me. I've been a bachelor for so long, I'm kind of set in my ways. I love the single life. So, as for kids, I guess I'll have to continue to latch onto one of yours from time to time."

Roy couldn't help but chuckle at his long time friend. 'Still the same old Johnny, as carefree as ever.' Roy often worried about his friend being lonely. Although Johnny would never admit to it, Roy was certain there were times when Johnny got hurt or was ill in the past, that he would have loved for someone to be with him while he recuperated.

Before long the ladies joined Johnny and Roy with drinks to go around. Johnny and Roy each took a beer while Joanne and Jennifer each had a soda. They spent about a half-hour getting reacquainted before Chris showed up at the house. The group was then ready to leave for the dinner. Jennifer requested that Johnny drive her. Without a word and with a nod from Roy that it was indeed okay, Johnny gracefully took Jennifer's arm and walked her to his new automatic Rover.

The evening turned out perfect, especially for Jennifer. Johnny brought her roses and he was her dinner companion, sort of.  She still had to have her mom, dad, and Chris there, but in Jennifer's eyes she would only be there with Johnny.

Jennifer was in love with her Johnny and wanted him in her life. When she was just a little girl he promised that one-day when she grew up, he'd marry her. Jennifer never forgot that promise. She felt that the promise he made to her when she was a little girl was the true reason why Johnny never got involved in a long-term relationship and remained unmarried. It was all because he was waiting for her to grow up and be his one and only Angel.  She remembered confessing her love to him the day he was shot.  What she held dear to her heart was his admission of loving her.  That revelation kept her going the five long years she was in Massachusetts.

For the most part Jennifer's dream was coming true and before the night was finished that dream would be complete.

Jennifer glanced across the front seat of the Rover at Johnny. He looked devilishly handsome in his dark gray suit. She was very proud to have such a wonderful, elegant man to escort her tonight. Although he now walked with a limp and a cane, she didn't let that detract from how she felt about him.  She smiled tenderly at him.

Johnny couldn't help but notice the sparkle in Jennifer's crystal blue eyes; eyes she definitely got from her Dad. "What's so amusing Angel?"

"I'm just happy Johnny. After all this night only happens once in a life time for a person." Johnny reached over grasping Jennifer's hand; he raised the hand to his lips and gave it a small quick kiss. "You're absolutely right Angel. A person only graduate's once. You should be proud. I know I am."

"Oh believe me Johnny, I am proud, very proud indeed." Jenny replied leaning her head back against the headrest and closing her eyes. She thought about the upcoming night and wondered how she was going to get time alone with Johnny.

Dinner was at MacAskill's, a new restaurant over looking the Marina. Unfortunately Chris was only able to attend for the main meal as he had to get back to work at his Station. So it would be just the four of them for dessert.

The atmosphere inside the restaurant was breath taking. The tables in the dinning room were decked out with crisp white tablecloths and set on each table were candles and a centerpiece of flowers.

"This is wonderful," Jennifer said with joy. She had never been taken to such an exquisite place before.
"I wanted the best for my baby. Besides this is a special night for you," Roy chimed as he lovingly placed an arm around his only daughter and steered her in the direction of their table as they followed the hostess.

As much as Jennifer adored her dad, this was one of those times she wished it were Johnny that had his arm around her instead. Hopefully that would happen later in the evening if she had her way.

The five had dinner then Chris excused himself to return to work. The remaining four had dessert and talked over the next hour. Finally with midnight approaching, Roy and Joanne felt it was high time to be going home. Just before they were to leave, Jennifer spoke up. "Would it be okay if Johnny drives me home?"

Roy looked at his best friend. Johnny nodded his head that he didn't mind. After all it was Jennifer's night.

"I suppose that would be fine. Just make sure you don't take advantage of Johnny's good nature Sweetie." Roy said. He then looked at his friend. "And Johnny, I know she has you wrapped around her little finger, so don't let her push you around too much."

Johnny placed his hand over his heart and placed a 'who me' look on his face.

"And I expect to see you home before morning. Understand?" Roy said shaking his finger at his daughter. Then Roy let out a chuckle. He knew he could trust Johnny with any member of his family. That was a given, but what Roy didn't know was that he couldn't trust his own daughter to behave like a lady.

"Okay
dad," Johnny mocked.  "I'll be sure to have her home before the sun rises in the morning. In fact, would it be okay if I took her out sight-seeing some before I bring her home? I mean considering she is awake, the lights at night are beautiful and I would love to show them to her."

"I don't see why not Johnny. I trust that you'll take good care of her."  Jennifer stood back and listened intently to the conversation Johnny and her dad were having. She was hoping that she would be able to spend some time alone with Johnny before he took her home. Suddenly she heard just what she waited to hear. Roy was going to allow Johnny to show her some of the sights.

'Well now, Johnny, you are definitely going to see some sights. I guarantee it.' Jennifer thought.

        ******

The drive along the Pacific Coast Highway was breath taking. The lights that glistened off of the boats anchored in the harbor were sensational. During the drive, Johnny was sipping soda just before he hit a pothole on the road. Grabbing hold of the steering wheel with both hands to regain control of his vehicle, Johnny dropped the soda onto his lap. The liquid quickly ran out of the can, over his lap, and down between his legs.

Having pop soaked pants wasn't a very pleasant feeling. Johnny decided that since his ranch was at least 30 minutes closer than Roy's house, he wanted to head home and change before driving Jennifer home for the night.

When he announced his plan to Jennifer, she smiled with delight.

'I couldn't have planed this better if I tried. I sure hope you're ready for me tonight Johnny, because I am certainly ready for you.' Jenny thought

Jennifer, still a virgin, saved herself for the one she loved. That one was Johnny. It didn't matter that he was nearly 23 years older than her. She felt that she was ready.

Turning onto the road that led to his ranch, he was unaware of some broken beer bottles that littered the road. In seconds, he heard the sound of air escaping from his tires.  He stopped the car and slowly got out.

"Oh great. Just what I need is two flat tires." Johnny said as he surveyed the damage.

Hearing Johnny's elevated voice Jennifer poked her head out the window. "What wrong Johnny?" Johnny looked up from his angle. "Two flat tires. I only have one spare. It's only a short walk to the ranch. I sure hope your dad doesn't mind if you spend the night."

Inwardly Jennifer couldn't believe her luck, the rest of the night alone with Johnny in his home. She couldn't have planed it better if she had tried. She knew her Dad would let her stay. Now all she had to do was complete her plan. Seduce Johnny.

Johnny was right.  It was just a hop, skip, and a jump to the ranch, if you didn't walk with a limp and a cane.  However, his disability didn't slow him down, too much. An added bonus was that Johnny had left the porch light on so he didn't have to fumble with his key when he arrived home.

The first thing Johnny did once he entered his home was to phone Roy. As he thought, Roy had no problem with Jenny spending the night.  Roy had even told Johnny that he would drop by early in the morning to give him a hand with his flats.

          *********

Johnny rummaged around in his dresser to find something for Jenny to wear to bed. While she was in the bathroom he prepared the bed in the spare room. When he finished that task, he entered the master bath so he could shower. He was still quite sticky from the soda.

Jenny waited until she heard Johnny's shower running. She knew he would have one. He told her how sticky he was. Once Johnny was under the spray for several minutes, Jenny removed her clothes and walked into Johnny's bathroom.

Jenny watched the silhouette of Johnny's body through the curtain. Her sexual desire increased. Carefully she pulled the curtain back near the rear of the tub and stepped inside.

Johnny felt the sudden cool breeze. He quickly washed the soap from his face and looked toward the rear of the tub. What he saw not only startled him but scared him as well. He jumped.
"Jennifer! What in hell do you think you're doing?" he yelled.  Johnny tried without fail to cover his private area with his hands. However his body betrayed his thoughts.

'This is my best friends daughter. He'll kill me for even having these thoughts.'

"It's okay Johnny. I'm of age now and we can be together," was Jenny's response.

"Are you nuts? Your dad will have my head on a platter, not to mention what else he'll do to me."

For each step Jennifer took toward Johnny, he stepped back away from her. Johnny was cornered when he backed into the wall. Jenny reached up and placed her hands around Johnny's neck and then she leaned up and brushed her lips across his.

"It's okay Johnny. I know you want me too. I just know it." Jennifer whispered as she claimed Johnny's lips.

Johnny wasn't sure whether it was his hormones or the desire to be with Jenny, but he began to respond to the kiss.  In seconds the kiss turned hungry and deepened.

Breaking the kiss, Johnny bent down to turn off the water. Ignoring his disability, he picked Jennifer up into his strong arms and carried her into his bedroom. Johnny hobbled over to his bed and gently laid her down.

Climbing onto the bed beside her, Johnny reclaimed her lips for a deep lung-sucking kiss. At the same time he ran his free hand down her body.

Pressing his hand flat against her lower stomach he rubbed it across her body, feeling the smooth delicate skin underneath.

'I guess I'll just have to face the music later. I'm already a dead man.' Johnny thought.

Breaking the kiss briefly, Johnny looked into Jennifer's eyes, "Your dad is going to kill me."   Jennifer smiled back at him. "Please Johnny, make love to me. I love you so much and I know you love me too. Isn't that what's important? Love?"

Johnny wasn't sure if it was the growing desire, the shiver that coursed his spine, or the fact Jennifer was right.  He did love her.

"Jenny, are you sure this is what you want?"

Jenny placed her hands on either side of Johnny's face. She brushed her lips across his. Then she whispered. "I've wanted this for a long time. I love you and you're the one that I want."

"Jen, you are so beautiful.  Just wait a sec while I get a condom."  Johnny reached over to his night table drawer, but Jen stopped him.

"Johnny, it's okay. I'm on the pill."

"You are?"

Jen didn't let Johnny finish. She knew what he was thinking. "You can be on the pill for other things besides birth control.  My periods are irregular so my doctor wanted me to be on the pill to manage it.  It's okay, Johnny.  I want to feel it all."

Johnny closed the drawer and looked into Jennifer's crystal blue eyes. All he could see was love pouring out at him.   As he made love to his Angel, Johnny became aware he had taken her virginity.  At first he was a bit surprised.   He thought with her on the pill that she was sexually active.  Johnny figured Jenny was saving herself for the right person. This alone gave Johnny a reason to smile and treasure their union.

After a few minutes Johnny climbed off of her and wrapped his arms tightly around her. Snuggling close, the two lovers surrendered to sleep.

***

Johnny's alarm clock went off at 5:00am.  He reached over to hit the snooze button and realized he wasn't alone in bed.  He looked at Jenny Ann sleeping beside him.  He moved her hair off her face.  She opened her eyes from his touch.

"Hi," she said.

"Hi back."  He replied.

"Are you angry with me, Johnny, for what I did?"

Johnny stared into her blue eyes.  "Angry, noooo.  Just a bit overwhelmed."  He shifted in bed.  "We better get up and shower."  Johnny gave her a kiss on the head.  Jenny pulled Johnny to her and wouldn't let him get up.  Johnny had an idea of what she wanted to do and frankly didn't mind.

"I want to explore you, Johnny, if you'll let me," Jenny said.

"I'll never say no to that."  Johnny looked at Jenny and she moved her head.  Johnny continued, "Angel, I didn't mean to imply, well, I guess, ah I don't know."  Johnny fumbled with his words.  Jenny put her fingers to Johnny's mouth to stop him from talking.

"Johnny, I know you've been with many women and it's okay to acknowledge it.  All that matters is that you're with me now."

Their lovemaking the previous night was frenetic.  Johnny wanted their morning session to be more passionate.

The two lovers were spent from their fevered lovemaking. As they cuddled, Jenny ran her hand up and down Johnny's back.  She felt the extensive scars from his back surgery.  She sat up in bed to look at them.

"What's wrong, Angel?"  Johnny asked.

"Oh Johnny, I never knew how much damage that bullet caused.  I'm so sorry."  Jenny said, hiding her emotions.

Johnny sat up and wrapped his arms around her. "There's nothing to be sorry about.  I'm alive.  I've got my health and now I have you."  He kissed her and held her in his arms.  "We better shower before your, eh I mean, Roy comes here to pick you up."  Johnny was going to say father, but stopped before he said that word.  Johnny didn't know what was going to happen with their new relationship, but he knew he had to stop thinking of Jenny as a little girl and more importantly, separate Roy from being her father.  He knew that would not happen without a cost.

After adjusting the water temperature, Johnny helped Jenny step into the shower. The water cascading down over their bodies felt heavenly as the two lovers embraced and kissed.

With a soapy facecloth, Jenny and Johnny each washed the other, making sure to cleanse every crevice and indentation. Once done, the two stood under the spray and kissed as the soap washed away from their bodies.

Johnny wrapped a soft towel around Jenny and one around himself before stepping out of the tub. The two lovers walked back into the bedroom, toweled off and dressed.   Jenny only had her clothes from the previous night, so Johnny found a t-shirt and sweatpants for her to borrow.  The two played as they dressed, teasing each other.  While Jenny brushed her long golden hair, Johnny took the brush from her hand and continued to brush it, absorbing the clean, fresh scent.

"I better stop before I get in trouble."

"What's the matter Johnny?  Afraid you're gonna start a fire?"  Jen said giggling.  She walked over to him and put her arms around his waist.  He obliged by hugging her too.  He kissed the top of her head.

"I want to give you something and then we better eat breakfast.  After that I've got some tires to change."  What Johnny didn't want to say is that Roy was going to be over soon.

Johnny walked over to his dresser. Lying on top was his original paramedic pin he had when he graduated the program back in 1972. He picked it up and placed the treasured item into Jenny's hand. "Here I want you to have this."

Jenny looked at the pin. "Oh Johnny. I don't know what to say."

"Say you'll keep it and remember our night together."

"I will. Always," she said giving Johnny a kiss.

Twenty minutes later, a knock came at the front door. Answering it, Johnny greeted his best friend as he always had.

Roy came in with a bag and saw Jenny sitting at John's breakfast nook.  He noticed she was wearing Johnny's clothes, but didn't think twice about it.

"I brought you some clothes to change into. Figured you would want something more casual to wear."

"Thanks, Daddy."  Jen got up and took the bag from her father.  She gave him a kiss on his cheek.  She looked into the bag's contents.  "I can tell mom picked out this stuff for me."  She gave her father a look.

"What do I know about fashion?  Hell, I wear a uniform most of the time!"

"You want some coffee Roy?"

"Sure, why not."

The two men sat at the table chitchatting.  Jenny went into the guest bathroom and changed into her own clothing.  She didn't want to take Johnny's off because they had his scent on them.  She wondered if he'd mind if she took them home with her.  It would be another thing to remind her of those glorious hours.  She shrugged her shoulders and knew he wouldn't mind.

Jenny hoped she'd have time to speak with Johnny before her dad came over.  Part of her was insecure and wanted to know that Johnny was going to be a part of her life - an adult part of her life beyond Uncle Johnny.  All these emotions were confusing her.  Was she just going to be a one-night stand?  She told him she loved him, but he didn't reciprocate with similar feelings.  She needed to talk this over with someone.  But she couldn't talk to her mother about it!  At least, not until the relationship was secure. After staring at the mirror for a long time, Jen decided to play it one day at a time.  She came out from the bathroom hearing laughter from the kitchen.  That put a smile on her face.

"Well, there's my little girl."  Roy said.  Hearing that made Johnny wince inside.  Jen was no longer a little girl.  Their actions during the night put an end to her innocence.  Jennifer was a woman in all possible ways.

"Daaddee, you're embarrassing me in front of Johnny."  Jenny said with mock annoyance.

"What, no more Uncle Johnny?"  Roy asked.

Jen and Johnny looked at one another and smiled.

Johnny reached for his cane and stood up.  He put his hand on Roy's back and said, "I think my uncle days are over."  Roy looked at him quizzically.  "Come on and help me with the tires."

Jenny remained in the house while Roy helped Johnny change the tires on the Rover. After replacing the one wheel with the spare, Roy tossed the damaged tire into the back of his truck. They picked up Jenny on the way to the nearby garage. Johnny would see if the tire could be fixed, if not, he'd purchase a new one. As fate would have it, the tire was a destroyed, so Johnny had the mechanic place a new tire on his rim.

During the return trip to the Rover, Jenny sat between her two favorite men and listened to them talk. Their conversation wasn't any different than it had ever been in the past when Johnny dropped by the house for a visit. Inside, Jenny became a bit dispirited wondering if what she and Johnny shared the night before was a mistake, if indeed it was only a one night stand in Johnny's eyes.

Jenny remained in Roy's truck while her father helped Johnny with the remaining wheel. Jenny spent this time thinking. She loved Johnny. She realized that her father couldn't know, at least for the time being, what went on inside the ranch house the night before. Somehow, someway, she wanted, no she needed, a repeat of her night with Johnny. More than that, Jenny wanted Johnny to be a permanent fixture in her life.

Occasionally Jenny heard some laughter coming from the two men. She wondered exactly what they found so amusing, but then she remembered the kind of rapport they shared since the day they both met.

When Johnny opened the passenger's side door, Jenny jumped in her spot, startled out of her reverie.

"Hey Angel. It's okay. It's just me," Johnny said placing a hand on Jenny's arm and stroking it with his thumb. Jenny looked down at the action, then looked up at Johnny and smiled. Johnny returned her smile. Roy opening his door caused Johnny to pull his hand away. "Angel, I just wanted to tell you I enjoyed having you spend the night and I'll see you soon," he said. Johnny then looked across at Roy. "I'll see you later too Pally. And thanks for your help this morning."

"No problem Johnny. Thanks for taking care of my little girl last night."

Johnny nodded to his friend then closed the door. As he walked back to his Rover the words 'little girl' rang over and over again in his head. He knew that Roy would forever think of Jenny as his little girl. He only hoped that in time, his friend could live with him being part of his little girl's life in an entirely different way. But for now, Johnny knew what transpired in his home over the past twelve hours had to remain a complete secret.

Roy and Jennifer drove off.  Jenny didn't have the chance to talk with Johnny again, alone.  She also knew that he couldn't call her at home to talk with her.  However, she could call him.  Jenny didn't want to do that.  She didn't want to seem possessive and scare him away.  Considering John Gage was still a bachelor at 46 meant there was something in his background that frightened him from commitment.

Johnny went back into his house after the DeSotos left.  He was wondering how he was going to handle Jennifer.  Part of him wanted to see her again, however, the rational part of him knew that nothing good could come out of developing a relationship with her.  The negative facts were first and foremost on his mind. She was the daughter of his best friend.  Secondly, he was single for so long, he didn't know if he could open up his life to Jennifer.  He'd have to find a way to talk with her privately to see what her expectations were.  Yes, she said she loved him, but that could be from trust.  Maybe she wanted to lose her virginity with someone she trusted and get that trial out of her way.  Maybe that's all their encounter was ever meant to be.  Johnny wasn't sure and the more he thought about it, the more confused he became.

He limped into his bedroom and started to strip the bed of its sheets, rolling them into a ball and throwing them on the floor.  Johnny sat down on the bare mattress and held his head with his hands.

"What did I do?" He said to himself.

~*~*~*

Jennifer never made the call to Johnny.  She thought about him, but had to concentrate on her job at Rampart.  Jenny figured that after working for six months she'd be able to save up enough money to move out on her own.  Then, she could see Johnny without anyone's knowledge.  Thoughts like that kept Jennifer happy.

Part of Jennifer's rotation through Rampart included working Emergency.  Jenny was happy with that because she knew she'd see her brother and Johnny from time to time.

Several weeks passed and the most Jenny could do was catch a quick look, a few words, or a stolen kiss with Johnny while at work. Neither of them wanted to risk exposing their newfound relationship.

"You look a bit green, Jennifer.  Are you okay?"  Dixie McCall asked.

Jenny, who was feeling a bit nauseous said, "I'm okay.  I went out with Chris and some of his buddies last night for Mexican food.  I guess it's not sitting well with me."  Jenny hated lying to Dixie.  She wasn't feeling well.  In fact, she was feeling sick for the past week.

Dixie knew Jennifer most of her life and had no reason to suspect  what Jennifer said wasn't true.

"Well, if you don't feel better in a day or two, you should let one of the doctors take a look at you," Dixie said with motherly concern.

Jenny smiled.  "Okay Dix. It's a deal. Oh Dix, I heard something about a mugging outside the hospital the other day.  I heard a nurse was hurt."

Dixie looked at her and grimaced.  "Yes, one of the nurses from the maternity ward was assaulted and mugged after her shift.  She was badly beaten when she resisted the mugger.  The police don't know if it was an isolated incident.  We need to be more careful of our surroundings."

Jenny looked up and saw John Gage walking toward the base station.  He was escorting several student paramedics. Johnny didn't expect to see Jenny there and covered it well with a lopsided grin.

"Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce you to the reason I'm standing here today.  This is Dixie McCall, the Head Nurse of Emergency.  She is to be given the same respect that you give me."

"If Chet were here, Johnny, he would have a good comeback for that." Dixie answered.

One of the students eyed Jennifer and walked boldly over to her.  "Are you also part of this infamous Emergency department, Miss, eh Miss...?"  He put his hand out to further his introduction.

"My name is Jennifer. Jennifer DeSoto."  She took his hand and shook it.

Looking at Johnny, his student, Rafael, said,  "Don't tell me Cap'n but she's the daughter of your partner, isn't she?"

Johnny smiled at his student and nodded his head.

"Okay guys, we don't want to take up too much of their time.  Just remember, you take care of Dixie and she'll take care of you."  He gave Dixie a wink and she smiled.  "Let's go."

His students walked down the corridor with Johnny taking up the rear.  He was able to look at Jenny and make eye contact with her.  He hated the fact that he hadn't been able to really talk with her for several weeks, but there was nothing he could do about it.  Her shift work and the fact that she lived with her parents prevented him from contacting her.  On some level, he wished she would call him.

"Wow, that DeSoto girl is some piece of ass," one of the trainees said to another.

Johnny heard the comment and sighed.  He wanted to hit the kid that said that. Instead he reminded his students to use a little respect in regards to the staff.  As he thought about the words, he smiled inwardly. It was true; Jennifer was a beautiful woman.  His mind told him that Jennifer should be with someone her own age and not some middle aged, broken down hose jockey, but in his heart he wanted her to be his own.

                                                  ~*~*~*~

Another week passed and Jenny's stomach continued to give her problems. She found herself regularly paying a visit to the bathroom both at home and at the hospital. With all the flu patients Rampart that arrived everyday in the ER, Jenny figured she picked up a bug from one of them. And with her hectic schedule, Jenny couldn't seem to shake it.  One day, Dixie found Jenny bent over the toilet in the ladies room retching. It was then, Dixie decided the young woman needed to see a doctor.

Walking into the treatment room, Dr. Brackett was a bit surprised as to see who his patient was. "What seems to be the problem, Jenny?" he asked taking note of Dixie's concerned face.

"I don't really think it's anything to worry about, but Dixie here has other ideas."

"Well why don't you tell me what the problem is?"

"It's really nothing…"

"Don't you say it's nothing, young lady. You've been sick to your stomach for almost three weeks now," Dixie scolded.

"It's just the flu Dixie. That's all. Like all the other patients, given time, it'll pass and I'll be fine."

"Okay Dr. DeSoto. How about you let me check you out so I can decided if it's nothing to be concerned about or not?" Brackett said sternly.

"Do you use this tone with my father?" Jenny asked.

"When he's being difficult, yes!" Brackett chuckled.  "But I use it more with Johnny!"

"Alright then. Check me out, but I'm telling you, I have the flu," Jenny said giggling.

After asking Jenny about her medical history and giving her a complete exam, Brackett pursed his lips and ordered some tests, including a pregnancy test. When Jenny heard this she abruptly sat up on the exam table. "I don't think that's necessary Dr. Brackett. I'm on the pill."

"Are you active?"

"Excuse me?" Jenny asked.

"Have you had intercourse anytime within the last couple months?"

"I don't believe this. I'm not pregnant," she said shaking her head.

"Jenny, have you been sexually active with anyone recently?"

Jenny closed her eyes and thought back to that night at Johnny's ranch. "Yes," she whispered.

"Okay then. I will run the test, that way we can rule pregnancy out if it comes back negative.  Jenny, remember I'm your Doctor and anything and everything you tell me is in strict confidence."

As Dixie began to take blood for the ordered tests, she noticed how quiet Jenny became. She thought the young woman might be in need of a sympathetic ear. "Jenny, I'm a good listener if you're up to talking."

"Nothing to talk about."

"I think there is. You're worried about the pregnancy test."

Jenny looked at Dixie. Tears pooled in her eyes. "Wouldn't you be?"

"That depends, Jenny."

"My parents will be very upset if I'm pregnant. I can see Dad now. Lecturing me, wanting, no demanding to know whom… What about my career, Dixie? What happens to that if I am? I'm on the pill. It's not supposed to happen." Jenny began to sob.

Dixie wrapped her arms around the young woman in a comforting manner. "Jenny, I know it may seem like the end of the world right now, but it's not. We don't even know if the test will turn out positive. Besides, if it is, you will manage and if your father gives you a hard time, you come and see me. I'll straighten him out. After all you're not a little girl any more. You're a grown woman."

Jenny knew that the results would take several days.  When Brackett mentioned pregnancy, all of Jenny's symptoms fell into place.  But pregnancy was not supposed to happen when you're on the pill, she thought.  But she remembered that she missed a couple of days of taking the pill when she shifted her prescription to LA.

***

"Shit."  Jenny said, as she changed from her uniform into her street clothes.  "How am I going to explain this to my folks?  And what about Johnny?  He'll think I lied about being on the pill.  How could I be so stupid?"

It was late as Jenny walked to her car.  She was distracted by the day's events and didn't notice that she was followed to her car.  When she reached into her bag to get her keys, she felt an arm grab her.

"Okay young lady.  Don't turn around.  Gimme your wallet and you'll be okay."

In a scared voice, Jenny responded, "Okay."  She reached into her bag and gave the man her wallet.  She didn't turn around because she felt an object in her back.  She began to swoon but soon recovered.

"Gheesh, you only got five bucks in here.  Gimme your jewelry.
NOW!"

"I don't have any.  I just have a watch."  She took the watch off.

"This piece of crap?"  He took the watch and threw it at her.  His anxiety was growing.  "Look bitch, I need money and I need it now. Gimme your bag."

"Okay. Just take it easy."  Jenny said with a shiver in her voice.  She had a feeling this guy was an addict in desperate need of money for his next fix.

"What is this shit?" he said to no one in particular.  He took out the paramedic pin that Johnny had given Jenny after their night together.  "Is it valuable?"

"No, don't take that.  It's not worth anything.  It's just a paramedic pin."  Jenny said on the verge of tears.

He looked at Jenny who had turned around to confront her assailant.

He punched her in the face and she crumpled to the ground.  "That's for the shit you have."  As Jenny lay on the ground, falling into unconsciousness, the robber kicked her in the back. "And that's for lookin' at me.  You better forget you ever saw me.  I got your wallet so I know where you live and work, Ms. DeSoto," he spat out.  After getting over his rush of adrenaline, the mugger took one last look in Jenny's bag.  He threw it on the ground, scattering its contents, and ran away.

Jenny lay on the ground for some time before she was found.

~*~*~

"Roy, will you stop pacing."  JoAnne said to her distraught husband.

"Jo, Jenny would call if she was gonna be late.  This is not like her."

"Maybe something happened at work and they needed her to stay at the hospital.  You, of all people know how crazy that ER is.  How many times did you and Johnny help them out?  Remember that time those bikers had a fight and you had to help out?  I bet that's what happened."

"Yeah, I guess you're right.  You know, I worried about her when she was in Boston, but it's different now that she's back.

***

While Roy was worrying about his daughter, Chris DeSoto and his partner Jeffrey Barnes were getting ready to leave Rampart.

"Why don't you ever let me drive the squad, Chris?"

Chris laughed,  "You know you sound like my dad's old partner, Johnny. You know, Cap'n Gage.  Dad rarely ever let him drive the squad when they were together."  Chris shook his head and took the keys out of his pocket.  "I guess you can drive tonight."

Jeffrey got into the driver's seat and adjusted the mirrors.  Chris got comfortable in the passenger seat.  Being a little self-conscious about driving, Jeff pulled the squad slowly out from their spot at Rampart.  Chris was looking around and noticed something strange.

"Hey Jeff. Stop. I think I see something over there."  Chris pointed. Jeff stopped the squad with a jerk. Chris jumped out of the cab and ran over.  As he ran, he called to his partner, "Jeff, it's a nurse.  Get the equipment."

Chris approached the fallen victim and noticed his sister's car.  He started to panic as he drew near fearing the worst.  He bent down and saw Jennifer on the ground.  Jeffrey ran up to Chris and wondered why Chris wasn't moving.

"Whaddya got, Chris?"

"Jeff, it's my sister."

"Shit."  Jeffrey said as he too knelt down beside the victim.  "You better let me handle this, Chris.  Why don't you go inside and let them know what happened." When Chris didn't move right away, Jeff grabbed his partner's arm. "Chris. You have to go inside the hospital. Get Doctor Brackett," Jeff asserted and nudged his partner.

Chris nodded, then slowly got to his feet. After taking one last look at his sister, he ran toward the ER entrance. Inside, Chris rounded the corner in the direction of the nurse's desk. He ran headlong into Dixie, almost knocking her to the floor. "Chris!" she barked. "You know running is not allowed in my hospital."

Chris froze. Panic began to etch his face. "Dixie…I'm sorry," he said glancing over his shoulder. "It's Jen…she's been hurt."

As Chris spoke, Doctor Brackett walked out of treatment room one and heard Chris's panicked words. "Where is she?" Brackett and Dixie both asked.

"In the parking lot. Jeff's with her."

Brackett motioned to a passing orderly. "Grab that gurney and follow us," he ordered.

Quickly Brackett, Chris, and Dixie, with the orderly wheeling the gurney, ran out into the parking area where Jenny lay on the ground. Upon seeing her, Dixie let a little gasp escape her lips before turning into the professional she was.

Promptly, Jenny was placed on a backboard once a collar was applied. She was then placed on the gurney.

Chris was told to remain outside the treatment room while Brackett and his team worked on Jenny. He ordered various tests, excluding X-rays until he knew for sure that the pregnancy test was negative. Due to the urgency of Jenny's medical needs, Brackett asked the attending nurse to put a rush on the prior blood work that was done.

While Brackett was treating Jenny, Dixie guided Chris to the lounge. She knew Roy and JoAnne needed to be phoned. "Chris, do you want me to call your folks or do you want to do it?" she asked.

Chris looked into Dixie's eyes. "I think I should Dixie." With that he reached for the phone and proceeded to dial his parent's number.

******

"Roy, you're beginning to wear a hole in the carpet," JoAnne said.

Roy stopped pacing and looked at the floor. "Sorry. I'm just…" the ringing of the phone caused Roy to stop mid sentence. He pounced on the phone. "Hello," he shouted a little more loudly than he had meant too.

"Dad, it's Chris."

Hearing Chris' voice caused a shiver to trail Roy's spine. He closed his eyes and prepared his mind for the worst. "What is it Chris?" he asked.

"Dad, Jenny's been hurt. She was attacked in the parking lot of the hospital. Dad-"

"Your mom and I are on our way Chris. Can you stay at the hospital?"

"Yeah, for a little while. Jeff called the station already and explained to Cap."

"Okay Chris. We'll be there soon," Roy said hanging up the phone. He glanced up into his wife's face. "That was Chris. Jenny has been hurt."

"Oh no. Is she okay?" Joanne asked a bit panicked.

"I don't know. Let's go."

Joanne nodded. She quickly grabbed her purse and hurried out of the house with Roy right behind her. The drive to Rampart seemed to take twice as long as it normally did. Once they arrived, they quickly entered the ER through the ambulance entrance. Chris stood just inside waiting for his parents. "How is she Chris?"

"I'm not sure yet Mom. Brackett is still with her."

Joanne hugged her son tightly. Roy went in search of Dixie or someone who could tell him what was going on.

***

Jennifer first noticed the smell.  That was the first thing that reminded her she was still alive.  She smelled rubbing alcohol and disinfectant.  She knew that she was in the hospital.

"Whaaa happened?"  Jennifer asked as she opened her eyes.  She saw Dr. Brackett and Dixie looking at her.  She tried to get up and was greeted by a wave of dizziness.

"Take it easy, Jennifer," Brackett said.  "It seems you were attacked.  How are you feeling?"

Jennifer licked her lips and felt her swollen lower lip.  She tried to lift her right arm but Dixie held it down.

"Steady, Jen.  You've got an IV in that arm."

"Um, I feel kinda weak.  My head hurts and my ribs and back.  I remember he hit me in the face and then I must have fallen.  He was yelling at me," she paused, her voice rising with fear.  "He said my name and he knows where I live.  I gotta warn my folks."

"Settle down, Jen.  The police are outside talking with Chris and Jeff.  Your parents are there too."  Dr Brackett said.

"Chris?  Jeff?  They're here?"

"Yes, Jennifer.  They're the ones that found you."

At that point, the door opened and a nurse came in.  "Here are the results you wanted, Dr. Brackett."  She handed the paper to him and walked back out.  Kel looked at the lab results and grimaced.

Roy was standing outside the treatment room and was able to see his daughter on the exam table.  He wanted to go inside. He wanted to be with his daughter. Under the circumstances, with Jenny no longer a little girl, he couldn't just walk in. He had to wait. He needed to do something. The waiting was driving him nuts, so he hovered and paced outside the treatment room.  Joanne saw her husband's agitation and walked over to him.

"Roy, come and sit down.  We know she's going to be okay."  Joanne said as she put her hand on his arm and started to pull him toward the waiting room.  Roy looked at Joanne and saw the compassion in her face.  That took the edge off of his uneasiness.

"You're so calm, Jo," Roy said.

She smiled and said, "years of practice."

Dr. Brackett walked to the back of the exam room and motioned for Dixie to join him.  "I'm glad we didn't do those x-rays.  It appears that Jennifer's pregnancy test is positive."

Dixie held her expression, remembering her earlier conversation with Jennifer.

"Well, Kel, you're gonna have to tell her."

"I know.  I don't mean to be an old fogey, but…" his voice trailed off.

"What? Are you disappointed in her, Kel?  Don't start with any moral judgements until you know the whole story."  Dixie said point blank.

Kel Brackett looked at Dixie and saw the emotion in her eyes.  He knew he was wrong.  He cleared his throat and then walked back over to Jennifer.

"So Doc. What's the verdict?  Am I gonna live?  I'm feeling a bit better, but this fat lip is annoying."

"Well Jennifer, besides the cuts and bruises, I don't think you have any broken bones.  You know we didn't do x-rays, but you're not complaining that anything might be broken.  However," he paused to figure out how to say it, "the pregnancy test came back positive."

Jennifer didn't react at first.  She broke off eye contact with Brackett.  Her hands grasped the gurney.  Dixie saw Jen's distress and held her hand.

"Jen, it's going to be okay."

"Am I going to lose the baby because of this attack?"

Brackett smiled, "Not if I have anything to do with it."

Brackett saw how the news affected his patient.  "Do you feel up to some company, Jenny?"

She looked at the doctor. "My parents?"

Brackett nodded.

"Don't tell them about the baby. Please?" Jenny pleaded.

Doctor Brackett placed his hand on Jenny's shoulder. "I'm not allowed to divulge that kind of information. You're my patient. What we discuss medically is confidential. The most I can tell them is that you'll be okay," he said.

"Thanks. I would like to see them."

"Fine. I'll let them know," Brackett replied before leaving the room.

Jenny looked up into Dixie's eyes. "Oh Dixie, what am I going to do?" she said with tears rimming her eyes.

"Like I told you Jenny, it's not the end of the world. Things will work out, you'll see. I'll be here for you."

******

Roy, Joanne, and Chris each looked up when Doctor Brackett walked toward the waiting area. "How is she Doc?" Roy queried before Brackett could say one word.

"She's going to be fine, Roy. I'd like to keep her overnight though."

"Why?" Roy asked somewhat worried.

"Come on Roy. Don't tell me that you've forgotten how I do business since leaving the paramedics?"

"No I haven't. I just thought…never mind. Do whatever you think is best for Jenny."

"Good. Now, if you'd like, all of you can visit with her for a few minutes before she's moved into her room."

"Great Doc, and thanks," Roy said before hurrying out of the room with his wife and son.

******

When Roy pushed the treatment room door open, he found Dixie giving Jenny a hug and soothing her. "Is everything all right?" he asked full of concern.

Dixie pulled back at the sound of Roy's voice. "Of course it is Roy. Jenny just needed a hug."

JoAnne quickly walked around to the other side of the treatment table and hugged her daughter. "Are you okay sweetie?"

"Yes mom. I'm okay, now," she said hugging her mother in return.

Dixie took this moment to leave the room giving the family some time alone. She was certain Jenny wouldn't tell her parents about her pregnancy, at least not yet. Dixie's shift was over. It was over for nearly an hour, but she thought she would stick around for a short time. She felt that maybe after Jenny was settled in her room for the night and Roy and JoAnne went home, Jenny might want to talk.

*****

"How ya feeling, Jenny?" Dixie asked as she stepped into the young nurse's hospital room.

"Better now that dad and mom have gone home for the night. I love them, but they can…be a bit over protective."

"That's a parents prerogative, Jenny. Besides, isn't it better that they care than not?"

"I guess, but…"

"You're scared."

Jenny nodded. "Dixie. I don't know what I'm going to do. I never planned on getting pregnant."

"You're not alone Jenny. There are a lot of women out there that never plan on becoming pregnant." Dixie paused only for a moment as she studied her nurse. "Do you want to tell me who the father is?"

Jenny closed her eyes. She knew she couldn't say anything, at least not yet. She thought the easiest thing she could do for the moment was explain about her relationship, without disclosing Johnny's name. "I can't tell you that Dixie. What I can tell you is he's twice my age. I love him very much. We've known each other a long time and we've only just started our relationship. And now…I'm pregnant. Something we didn't plan."

"I see," Dixie said in a placid tone.

"Dixie, it's not what you think. He loves me too."

"I'm sure he does Jenny. You know as well as I, that you won't be able to keep your secret for long. You're going to have to talk to him."

"I don't know if I can. I don't know how he's going to feel about the baby."

"Do you think he'd leave you because you're pregnant?"

"No. He'd never leave me. He's protected me for a long…" Jenny trailed off realizing she may have already said too much to the seasoned nurse. One thing she had learned over the years was that Dixie was one very smart woman.

"By the way, I brought you your purse and the contents that were scattered over the ground," she said handing a plastic bag to Jenny. Before Dixie said good night and left the room, she pulled a paramedic pin out of her pocket and handed the item to Jenny. "I found this lying beside you in the parking lot. I assume it belongs to you?"

Jenny looked at the pin and fingered it. She glanced up at Dixie and nodded. Jenny wondered what if anything that Dixie might know, but for now she decided to remain silent.

"Okay then. Good night, Jenny. If you want to talk, you know my phone number and you know where I work," she said as she left the room. Once Jenny's door closed, Dixie remained where she stood for a few minutes and thought about what Jenny had told her. About the man being twice her age, how he knew her for a long time, about how he loved her, and about how he protected her for a long time. Dixie assumed what Jenny had not intended to divulge. Then she thought about the paramedic pin. Dixie had a feeling she knew who it belonged to, but without confirmation, wasn't going to jump to conclusions.
