Unanswered Question Becca Teaser: This story is based on true events. If you're not in the mood for a sad one, please skip it. -------------------- "Doc. We got back as fast as we could. How is she?" Gage asked. Dr. Brackett, hunched over the base station radio, was silent. Gage and DeSoto exchanged a look of concern. Brackett turned slowly, his eyes red-rimmed and puffy. They knew. The normally stolid physician retrieved a handkerchief from his pocket. "We got her to surgery as fast as we could. There was a tear in the superior vena cava. We tried to repair the damage, but she lost too much blood. She died on the table." "Doc ..." Johnny started. "Look, I'll see you guys," Brackett said and make a speedy exit around the corner. His next patient was waiting. Johnny closed his eyes, the run flashing through his mind. The little girl's mother was leaving on an errand. The child planned to stay next-door with her friend. But she had forgotten to tell her mom something. She grabbed the door handle just as the car was backing out of the driveway. She was run over. Brackett had seen many people die before. They all had. What was it about her? She touched everyone so deeply ... without ever speaking a word. Johnny would never know the answer. |
