2 Bonds = Pally and Junior by Jaime "Morning Roy," Johnny Gage called to his partner of six years with a smile as he came into the locker room early Tuesday morning. "You're certainly in a good mood for a Tuesday morning. Do I dare ask who the lucky lady is?" Roy DeSoto replied with a sarcastic tone of voice as he walked to his locker and began to change. Johnny never did cease to amaze him. He could have had the worst day yesterday and still come in with a huge smile. He could always be described as a person who could easily bounce back. "There doesn't have to always be a girl, but in this case her name is Katie Holden," John explained as he laced his shoes. "Katie huh?" Roy questioned buttoning up his shirt and then stopping to look at John. "Yeah. She's beautiful. She has the greatest looking eyes that I've ever seen and she's studying to be a nurse," Johnny replied as he started to walk out of the room. "Junior. How much do you actually know about this girl, besides she has beautiful eyes?" Roy questioned before Johnny could get out the door. "I just told you. She wants to be a nurse. Man Roy we just met yesterday. I'll wait to ask her to marry me until Friday," Johnny joked as he left the locker room. "Roll Call guys." Captain Stanley yelled to his men. "Junior about what we were talking about earlier. I just think you should take sometime. You just broke it off with Sharon about a week ago," Roy advised as he stood next to his partner as they waited for everyone else to file in line. "I know, Roy. And by the way, I still talk to Sharon, just not civilly," Johnny whispered. "Aww what's wrong, Gage, girl troubles again," Chet Kelly exclaimed as he came up to stand on Roy's side. "Well if you didn't always listen to the end of our conversations instead of the beginning you would know what we were talking about and that I don't have a problem with women," Johnny replied calmly as Captain Stanley stepped in front of the group of men. "Alright Gage, Chet! We have business to discuss. On the matter of that elementary fire on Brown Street, Vince just told me it was started by a student in the basement smoking." Captain Stanley explained as he paced back and forth so he could look at all the guys in the face. "I thought I smelled cigarette smoke down there," Mike Stoker replied as the cap passed him. "You were right then, Stoker. All right now. Onto the duties of the day. Mike, Marco you'll cook lunch and dinner and then clean the kitchen. Johnny, you're on clean up in the dorms and I want all the vehicles washed also. Chet you'll be washing the.........," Captain Stanley ordered, but then was interrupted by Chet. "Don't say it, Cap," Chet exclaimed. "Latrine duty, pal," Hank replied with a smile. "Ah man. How about Johnny here help me?" Chet asked with a sudden smile. "No way, Cap," Johnny replied. "Chet your still on punishment from your last prank that sent Marco to the hospital and Johnny to the dentist," Cap explained as he headed into the kitchen with everyone else following. "It's not my fault Johnny has a glass jaw," Chet exclaimed running to catch up with his Captain. "Let it go Chet. You have to clean the bathroom and I'm still paying that bill," Johnny replied clapping Chet on the right shoulder. "Ok ok," Chet gave in as he went over to sit with Henry the station's dog. "At least Henry here doesn't have a problem with me," Chet replied petting the dog. "Yeah Chet bond with the dog," Johnny exclaimed with a smile as he grabbed a donut that was lying on the table. "Johnny I wouldn't eat that pal," Chet warned as he saw John grab for the donut that was laced with green food coloring. "No Chet this is mine. It's the last one and your not getting it!" John exclaimed as he bit into it. "I warned ya pal," Chet replied as he ran from the room. "What's with him?" Roy questioned curiously as he turned to see Chet hovering on the other side of the squad, apparently out of harms way. "I don't know. That's just typical 'Chet way of life,' Johnny replied with a smile as he finished his donut. "Oh my gosh. Johnny what is in your mouth?" Marco questioned as he looked at John's mouth. "What do you mean what's in my mouth?" John questioned getting up from the table to go look in the toaster for his reflection. "There's nothing even.............,CHET!!!!!" Johnny yelled as he saw that his mouth was completely green. "What, what is it?" Roy questioned as he ran to his partner. "My mouth is green!" Johnny yelled as he whirled around to face Roy and the rest of the guys. "Where is he!?" John asked as he searched the room. "Who?" Cap questioned curiously. "Chet of course!" John replied licking his lips. "Look at this, Cap," John whined as he scrubbed his teeth with his finger. "Well Roy what do you think?" Captain Stanley questioned with a smile as he turned to his senior paramedic. "I think he should just try brushing his teeth for a couple minutes or so. I don't think it's anything serious, but I'll let ya know if he needs to go to the hospital," Roy replied guiding his partner by the shoulders to the locker room. "Come on, Junior," Roy explained. "I'm gunna kill him!" John yelled as he spotted Chet. "I'm gunna get you," John warned as he pointed his finger at his nemesis. "You're not going to now. Your coming with me," Roy explained grabbing John's arm as he tried to chase after Chet when he backed away. "Roy I'm fine, but he's gunna need the paramedic when I'm done with him," John replied furiously. "You know Johnny, ever since you got started with the paramedic program, you've taken everything so serious. You know Chet. Chet always called you his pigeon. You have to deal with it Junior," Roy explained as he pushed Johnny in front of the mirror. "I don't have to deal with his antics, Roy and quite calling me Junior already!" Johnny replied emphasizing the "Roy" part. He hated the nickname Junior. He could still remember the day when Roy first started to use that name 3 years ago. "Station 123 station 51 engine 42 building fire 1276 Walsh street cross street Bergan Ave time out 12:47," The announcer came over. "10-4 kmg365," Caption Stanley replied into the mike seconds later. "Let's go guys!" Cap called to his men as he ran to get in his truck where Mike Stoker was anxiously waiting to drive away. "This looks like a bad one guys. I want extra caution taken!" Hank yelled to his crew as they got out of their vehicles to see a blazing fire on all floors of the for floor building. "Ready John?" Roy questioned his partner of 3 years. "Let's stay close. I have a feeling were not gunna have much sight in there," Johnny explained as he pulled his mask down over his face and started forward with Roy doing the same thing. "Yeah," Roy replied through his facemask. "Roy, John. There's a man missing. He was last spotted on the 3rd floor!" Hank yelled to his paramedics. "We got him Cap," Roy replied as they charged into the building. "Johnny we'll head up this way. Looks like the fire started over there. We might be able to see better going up the back way," Roy explained when they were in the building. "I agree. Lead the way!" John yelled back making sure Roy had heard him before they continued on. "Ok," Roy replied nodding to John. "Watch out John!" Roy yelled as ahead of them there was debris falling out of the ceiling. "Yeah I see it!" John yelled back as they found a staircase that would take them to the 3rd floor. "Be careful!" John exclaimed as he saw Roy trip over something on the stairs. "I'm fine!" Roy replied back as they continued. "Let's go this way!" John explained as he pushed ahead of his partner and went off down the hall. "John, look there!" Roy yelled as his partner came back his way. "There's the guy. Let's get him and get out of here fast!" Roy exclaimed as he made his way to the guy. "I'm with you!" John yelled as he ran to catch up with Roy, but something fell on his head causing his facemask to crack. "Johnny!" Roy yelled when he didn't see Johnny coming. "I'm coming!" Johnny replied with a cough as he continued into the room where Roy and the missing man was. "You okay?" Roy questioned when he heard John cough not seeing the crack on the side of his mask. "Yeah. I just breathed in too hard. How's the guy?" John asked as he tried to cover the crack with his hand. "Looks like he may have a broken arm. He's starting to come around. Let's get him up," Roy advised as Johnny moved to the other side of the guy and grabbed his around the waist as Roy positioned himself on the other side being careful of his arm. "You came?" The man whispered. "We got ya. You just let us help you out of here," Johnny replied with another cough. "John you sure you're okay?" Roy questioned as they slowly made their way out of the room. "Yeah," John exclaimed hoarsely. "Hey man. My arm is killing me!" The man complained as they started their way down the staircase. "We'll give ya something for that when we get you out of here," Roy explained as they spotted the rest of their crew battling the blaze in front. "We got him, Cap," Roy exclaimed when they saw him coming into the building all suited up. "Good," The Cap yelled. The he spotted a gas leak coming straight for them through one of the rooms. "Go!" Hank yelled as they all cleared the building just as an explosion took place knocking Hank and Chet to the ground. "You okay, Cap?" Chet questioned as he got up and shook it off. "Yeah, let's get going!" Hank yelled as he got up and grabbed the fallen hose. "We were lucky," Roy exclaimed as they looked back toward the building. "I'd say so," John replied with a cough. "John wanna get the vitals while I set up with Rampart?" Roy questioned as they sat the guy on the rear bumper of the squad making a mental note to look Johnny over. He seems to have a bad cough coming on. "Sure," John replied with a cough followed by another one that killed his throat. "Ok man I'm gunna just take come vitals on ya now. Just don't try to move that arm," Johnny advised as he got out his equipment. "Oh I don't think that will be a problem," The man whispered. "Ok Roy BP is 100/89 pulse 100 and respirations are 19," Johnny relayed to Roy as he then told Rampart so they could treat this guy. "Squad 51 give the victim 5 milligrams of morphine and immobilize the arm then transport ASAP," Dr. Brackett replied at Rampart through the biophone in the base station as he waved to his best friend Dr. Joe Early. "What's ya got Kel?," Dr. Early questioned. "A fire. Station 51 is handling it. They got a man age 36 coming in with a possible broken arm. Nothing too serious," Kel replied. "Squad 51 10-4," Roy exclaimed at his end. "Johnny give him 5 milligrams of morphine and immobilize the arm," Roy ordered John giving him the splint. "There that should take away some of the pain," John replied as he injected the pain reliever into the man's arm. "John you ride in with him," Roy explained as he saw how shaky his partner looked as he injected the needle. "Ok," Came John's weak reply as he fastened the splint. *E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E* "Johnny you look horrible," Dixie exclaimed concerned as Johnny stepped out of the ambulance looking pale and coughing severely. "I'm fine. This is...... Vinny. He seems to not be in......... as much pain since his morphine. Vinny........ this is Dixie the...... head nurse," Johnny replied as he cleared his throat painfully, periodically. "Ok Vinny. We're gunna get you in 2 and have an x- ray of that arm," Dixie explained as she kept up with the gurney as it was pushed to the treatment room. "Johnny why don't you go get something to drink. That might help your sore throat," Dixie replied with a smile as she gave Johnny one last look before she went into the treatment room with the patient. "Hi Johnny," Kel exclaimed as he passed John and then went into the same room that Dixie had just gone into. "Hi," John replied barely above a whisper. "John. How's the guy?" Roy questioned as he came around the corner and spotted his partner. "He's gunna need an x-ray. Kel's in with him now," John replied with a cough. "You sound worse. What happened in there?" Roy questioned concerned as he reached out a hand to feel John's forehead, but was quickly pushed away. "I'm fine. I had something fall on me in there and it cracked my mask so I inhaled some smoke. Nothing that bad. I'm getting better," John replied as he cleared his throat with a smile that quickly turned into a wince. "Yeah sure Junior," Roy exclaimed as he grabbed John's hand and pulled him into a treatment room. "Junior? Roy I'm fine!" John yelled, but it didn't sound like a yell it was more like a whisper. "Listen I'm not gunna listen to your coughing all night. You obviously inhaled more smoke than your letting on," Roy explained. "I did not," John protested just as Dr. Morton came in. "Oh great!" John whispered. His favorite doctor. He was in for it now. "John, Roy. What seems to be the problem guys?" The doctor questioned, as he was surprised when he saw Roy and John arguing. "John's got this bad cough ever since that last call with the man stuck on the 3rd floor. Something fell on him and cracked his mask and he inhaled smoke. How much I don't know," Roy explained as he leaned against the wall and watched his partner getting madder at him. "Ok John. Let's get your favorite thing to do out of the way so I can get back to the real sick people," Dr. Morton replied as he pulled out his stethoscope. "Doc........," John started, but was stopped by Morton's raised hand. "Roy do you deal with this everyday?" The doctor questioned furiously. "He's only like this when he knows he's wrong," Roy replied with a smile as Johnny slowly lowered his guard. "Ok okay. Let's get this over with," John complained as he settled himself on the table. "So John. Does your throat hurt when you cough?" He questioned as he listened to his lungs. "Yeah a little I guess," John replied with a cough. "That means a lot," Dr. Morton exclaimed. "Yes," Johnny whispered. "Did you hurt your head when the debris hit you?" Dr. Morton asked as he checked John's pupils. "Nope. My helmet blocked that. I was hit on the side though," Johnny explained. "Ok. Well your lungs sound okay. I suspect that cough will subside in about an hour, but come back if it seems to get worse," Mike told John, but Roy felt that he was telling him not Johnny. "Thanks doc," John replied as he jumped off the table. "Bye guys and John take it easy!" Morton called to John with a smile. "Sure thing," John called back with a cough. "Well back to the station I guess," Roy exclaimed with a smile. "Why are you smiling?" John questioned as they walked out of Rampart. "I called you Junior before," Roy replied with a smile. "Yeah. What's with that?" John questioned as he hopped in the passenger side. "It kinda slipped out really. I use to call you that at my house when we first started to work together," Roy explained. "You did?" John questioned. "Yeah. I mean I wasn't really sure of you, but I did know that you were younger than me so we went by Junior," Roy replied with a smile as he started the squad. "I don't like that name. I may be younger, but I'm still a great paramedic. I'm just as good as you!" John complained as he bucked his seatbelt and then turned toward Roy. "I'm not saying you're not a good paramedic, but you're just younger than I am," Roy exclaimed as he pulled out onto the road in front of the hospital. "Well then why call me Junior? I call you Roy," John whined. "I'm sorry, Junior...... John. It's just a name that has grown on me," Roy replied with a smile. "Hey I got it. How about you call me... Johnny," John joked. "John....," Roy started, but was interrupted by John. "Why did you call me Junior again?" John questioned. "I guess just because I look out for ya," Roy replied. "You're not my father!" John exclaimed. "I know. It's just that ever since you came into the station 51 I guess I just say how young you were and I guess Junior just came about. John I don't wanna see anything happen to you. I think of you as my friend. If Junior bothers you so much I'll stop calling you that, but when I saw that back at the fire you were hurt I was afraid and I guess my emotions got the better of me," Roy explained with a smile. "I'm fine Roy," John replied as he watched Roy back the squad into the station. "Ok...... John," Roy exclaimed with a smile as he got out of the squad and went into the locker room. "Wait Roy," John called as he ran after his partner. You wanna know the real reason I didn't want you to call me Junior?" John questioned. "Yeah," Roy replied curious. "My Dad use to call me that before he died. I guess I gave all rights to him," John explained as he leaned against the brick wall of the apparatus bay. "I'm sorry," Roy replied as he reached his hand out to grasp John's shoulder in support. "No I'm sorry. I can't bring my Dad back, but I guess I just grew to hate that name ever since. It's just that every time I hear that nickname I think of him," John explained with a smile. "I'll work on not calling you... that name if you let me know when you want to talk about this more," Roy questioned sensing John wanted to talk more. "Ok. Thanks Roy," John replied with a smile. "Anytime John," Roy exclaimed with a smile. *E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E*E* "John?" Roy questioned John as he repeated his name when he got no response from him. "Huh... oh yeah what were we talking about?" John asked as he looked in the mirror to see his teeth still green. "About Chet I think. You've been like zoned out. You okay?" Roy questioned with concerned. "Yeah I was just thinking about that time we had that argument about the nickname Junior. You still call me that," John replied with a smile. "I'm sorry. It just slips out sometimes and I don't even notice it," Roy replied. "You know what. It's okay, Roy," John exclaimed with a smile. "Are you sure you're ok?" Roy questioned curiously. "I'm fine, Pally," John replied. "Pally huh?" Roy questioned with a laugh. "I've been thinking of a name for you and I came up with Pally," John explained with a smile as if he was satisfied with that name. "I like it," Roy replied with a smile. "Alright Pally. Let's go fill out some accident reports," John replied happily. "What about your teeth?" Roy quickly asked. "I kinda like um this color," John replied as he grabbed his GREEN PEN from his shirt pocket. "Whatever you say, John," Roy replied with a smile as he grabbed his pen and out the door they went. "Pally. I think Junior sounds better," John replied with a smile as he looked back at his partner. "Alright......... Junior it is," Roy exclaimed as he put his hand on John's shoulder. "Wow Pally I just got this great idea about these 2 paramedics that had this great relationship and they even decided to........," Johnny explained, but then was stopped by the klaxons. "Duty calls Junior!" Roy yelled as he ran to the squad with Johnny in tow. "Right behind ya Pally!" John exclaimed as he smiled letting his green teeth appear.
