_______________

The firefighters stood beside the grave. They were giving their respects to one of their own, a member of their crew who had given his life saving another. They'd responded to a report of a couple of kids caught in a cave-in. They had found one of the young boys but had been unable to locate the other.

Precious time was wasted as they searched until their friend suddenly started digging in an area away from the main excavation. Seeing what was happening, the rest had joined in and soon the entrance to a small cave was found. He disappeared into the hole despite protests, forcing the others to widen the hole if they were to follow.

Soon, the lost boy was pulled out of the cave. Before his rescuer could follow, the area shook and the cave collapsed. By the time his crewmates dug him out, he was dead.

He was accorded a funeral with full honors.

"It's hard to believe he's gone."

"He died a hero."
"Good-bye, my friend."

Words fitting and proper were spoken with pride.

"Flowers" were placed near the gravestone. A bouquet made of dog biscuits, for the name on the headstone read:
