Help!
(by John Lennon and Paul McCartney)

Help, I need somebody
Help, not just anybody
Help, you know I need someone, help

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways
My independence seems to vanish in the haze
But every now and then I feel so insecure
I know that I just need you like I've never done before

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me

When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round
Help me, get my feet back on the ground
Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh

Roy came home from an average day at work.  He had accepted the full time job as a paramedic instructor, and, yes, John Gage was his boss.  In the beginning it was a bit difficult for Roy.  For years he had been the senior paramedic partner and ultimately Johnny's boss and now the tables were turned.

It was true that the tables turned years ago when Johnny was shot and his ability to perform his true love, search, rescue, and care, came to an end.  However, Johnny was always one to find that door when another one closed.  He rehabilitated his life.  When Doctor Kelly Brackett offered Johnny the job to teach new paramedics, Johnny jumped at the offer, after he got over his anger.  He did his job with gusto, never letting his hip impairment get in his way.

Roy learned much from Johnny.  After Roy suffered his heart attack and knew that his active days with the fire department were over, it was Johnny who suggested that Roy teach.  Johnny knew Roy's demeanor would lend itself to teaching new recruits what it meant to be a paramedic.  Who better than Roy, one of the first six paramedics Los Angeles County trained.  He was the one who talked Johnny into signing up when the reality of a program was still a bill before Congress. Roy's zest for a dream he fought to make reality never left him. Even as a Captain, he kept in tune with the paramedics under his command and any new procedure they learned.  He made sure he remained certified, even though he wasn't a practicing paramedic.

Things had come full circle now, in a lopsided way.  Roy and Johnny were working together, teaching.  Johnny, however, had more administrative duties than Roy did.  That was funny in itself as Johnny always hated doing the paperwork, but his new responsibilities called for it and he did it with flair.

So, Roy came home from a full day of teaching with a whole new perspective for the program he initially helped shape.

Soon, the instructors would start spending full days in the field to observe, critique, and continue their education.  Roy was kind of looking forward to the 'field obs', as it was called.  It would get him out of the office and he'd get to see some of his old friends out in the field.  He wasn't allowed to do any rescue work, none of the instructors were.  He could help out with any medical issues, but his main job was to observe.  It would bring back bittersweet memories for Roy of all the rescues he and Johnny performed over the years.  That door was closed now and thanks to Johnny another one was open for Roy.

"Hi JoAnne," Roy said as he walked into his home.  He never knew what he'd find when he got home.  Four weeks ago, they buried their infant son.  Roy took a week off from work for two reasons.  He knew JoAnne was going to need him, and he too was weary from the emotional rollercoaster this unexpected pregnancy had caused.

JoAnne was another story and Roy was beginning to worry about her.  She dropped out from so many of the things she loved to do, including postponing her college course this semester.  They used to joke about how she was a 'knocked up' college student.  All of the laughter and joy was gone from her and if truth be known, it was gone from Roy too.  He just couldn't show it. He needed to be the strong one this time not only for JoAnne, but for his children too.

How one small child who never had the chance at life could invade a person's heart and forever change them, he couldn't answer. It was and probably always would be a complete mystery to him. For now, he had other more important matters to contend with.  Although JoAnne's depression was natural, he ultimately hoped it would run its course and she'd be back to her old self.

Roy walked into a darkened house, but he knew JoAnne was home. Her car was in its spot.  Turning on lights he heard a sound coming from upstairs and figured JoAnne was in their bedroom, watching television.  He walked up the stairs and found his wife there.  Although the television was on, JoAnne was staring up at the ceiling.

"Hi Jo."  Roy walked over to her and kissed her forehead.

JoAnne looked at the clock.  "I didn't realize it was so late.  I didn't prepare anything for dinner."  JoAnne started to get up.  Her hair was unkempt and her skin was pale.

"That's okay JoAnne, let's go out to dinner."

JoAnne shook her head no.

"Okay, let's order some pizza.  I'll go an' pick it up."

JoAnne looked at Roy and started to cry.  He sat down next to her and held her while whispering soft words of encouragement.  He wished he could take the sorrow away from her.  But he knew part of what she was going through was postpartum depression and possibly the onset of perimenopause.  He just hoped he had the wherewithal to help her.  He loved JoAnne dearly, more than life itself, and would do anything for her but she wasn't asking him for anything and that's what scared him the most.

***

It was a quiet night at the Gage home.  Kaitlin was sleeping.  Jenny was in the kitchen cleaning up and Johnny was in the living room doing some of the endless paperwork that came with his job.  When Jenny was satisfied with the kitchen she walked over to Johnny.

She placed her arms on his shoulders and lightly massaged them.  Johnny closed his eyes savoring the sensation.  "Did anyone ever tell you a nursing career would be perfect for you?"  Johnny whispered.

A smile appeared on Jen's face.  "Yeah, I thought about it, but my husband wants me to be barefoot and pregnant all the time, so I just can't go into another career at the moment."

Johnny looked up at Jen who was still behind him and smiled.  He put his paperwork down and motioned for his wife to join him.  Jenny didn't need to be told twice as she walked around to the front of their couch and sat down on her husband's lap.  He wrapped his arms around her and rubbed her back, snapping her bra under her t-shirt.  Jenny moved closer to Johnny and placed little kisses on his face.  Johnny's eyes were closed allowing her to continue.  When she stopped he opened his eyes wondering why.  Then he saw the look in her eyes and knew something was up.  His body tensed up in anticipation of a DeSoto female manipulation attack.

"Ole' man?"

"Yes Angel…"

"When are we going to go back to Poplar?"

Johnny figured Jenny would come around to ask again.  After JoAnne miscarried, Johnny started having doubts about having another child.  On the one hand it would be nice, but he was approaching his 50th birthday and didn't want to change diapers anymore.  At this point his job was demanding more time from him and he wanted to enjoy spending the time remaining with his wife and child.  "Jenny, about the adoption.  I'm not so sure I'm ready for it."

Jenny sat up, surprised at Johnny's comment.  She had no idea he was having second thoughts.  It didn't totally shock her because Johnny didn't share all of his thoughts with her unprompted.  "When did this change of heart occur and why am I finding out about this now?" Jenny demanded.

Johnny ran his hand through his salt and pepper hair and his eyes widened.  "I dunno, Jen.  I guess seeing what your parents went through; I guess I just am not sure about another child right now."

"If not now, when?" Jenny shifted off Johnny's lap and sat on the couch.

"I don't know Jen.  I'm not really thinking about another child right now.  I've got so many other things on my mind."

"Like what?  Doesn't your family come first?"

Johnny sighed knowing a full-fledged fight was coming on.  He loved Jennifer.  He loved her feistiness and love for life, friends and family.  But along with that zest for life was turbulent hostility that she could turn on instantaneously. "Jenny, you, Kaitlin, Chris, Roy, and JoAnne are my family and will always come first.  I suppose I'm happy with my family the way it is."

"So then it's a closed book.  No more children, no matter what I feel?" Jenny pointed at her chest.  "And you were going to tell me when?  Or were you going to wait until I said something first?"  She moved over on the couch and faced her husband straight on.

"Jenny, it's only been a couple of weeks since the funeral.  I wanted things to settle before I brought it up."  He held her hand, but she pulled it away.  "I think it was the death of the baby that brought out my true feelings.  And I told you that going to Poplar didn't necessarily mean we'd find a baby up for adoption.  It would just be the start."

Jenny just stared at him.  There were times she could predict his behavior, having known him all of her life, but tonight's revelation threw her.  She figured they'd be going back to Poplar within the month.  Johnny's change of heart was a shock that caused her essence to ache.  She looked at him and left the couch.  She went upstairs to her bedroom and slammed the door.  Johnny knew he'd be sleeping on the couch tonight.  That was another reason he always wanted a comfortable sofa, for times like this when he was not welcome in his own bedroom.

"God I love this place," Chris said opening up his menu.

"That makes two of us," Jeff replied looking over the selections. "I love Italian food," he added, a huge grin playing at the corners of his mouth.

The restaurant was a hot spot for many people in all walks of life. It was always bustling with activity at this time of the evening.  The hostesses were especially quick with seating people, handing out menus, and the first round of drinks.  Not only did it serve fantastic food; it was relativity inexpensive as far as eating out was concerned.  Even on the meager salary firefighters earned it was easy to plan a night out once or twice a month.

Dana and Meg smiled at each other before they too opened their menus.  They both loved it when the four of them could get together and getting together proved difficult at times.  Between the demands of their jobs and the planning of Jeff and Dana's wedding, they had to schedule an appointment just to have dinner together to chat and have fun.  Getting together always proved to be an interesting event.

"I liked the house," Meg said glancing over the top of her menu.

"Which one," Dana replied.

"The last one we were in. Think of the possibilities, the deck with future hot tub for four and a blooming garden to gaze at while you're relaxing and sipping away at a drink. Think about how high those hedges will be in a couple years," Meg commented smiling and giving Dana a wink. "No one on either side of you will be able to see what you might use that hot tub for."

"You're right," Dana agreed grinning.  "The house does have major possibilities. And to think, there are also four bedrooms to fill."

Jeff coughed. "Excuse me! Do I get a say in any of this?"

"Of course you do honey bunch," Dana cooed reaching up and lightly pinching his cheek. "I'd never make plans without your input," she added smiling slyly.

Chris and Meg laughed. It was common knowledge among their friends that when Jeff announced his pending marriage the men at the station continually razed him that after the nuptials, he'd be preparing for a bundle of joy that would upset the happy little life that he had all planned out for the next 20 years.

Of course he ignored their taunting and kept a brave face saying nothing mattered 'cause he was in love with the most beautiful woman in the world.  The truth was, inside, their taunting terrified him. It was one thing to deliver a baby and lay it into the waiting arms of the happy mother, a joy he was speechless to describe, but it was quite another to take on the responsibility of becoming a father now or in the future.  If truth be known, little people truly frightened him.  He loved Dana and somehow if the inevitable happened he would somehow survive even if he had to seek out advice from someone older. He might even go to his wiser, sort of adopted dad, Roy.

"I know, but you and I both know we can't rush things," Jeff replied grasping Dana's hand and giving it a squeeze.

"Rushing things?  You've got to be kidding me.  We've been planning this wedding for almost six months now and we've been looking for a house for over a month. I don't call that rushing things," she said innocently.

"Well, you know what I mean."

"Excuse me!" Dana replied knitting her brows.

"Hey guys," Meg interrupted. "We're supposed to be having fun tonight."

"Meg's right. Life is way too short…" Chris trailed off as the memory of the recent funeral filled his thoughts. 'Too short.' His heart ached for his little brother, but he knew considering the health problems the little one had, the child was probably better off where he was rather than living what ever short life he would have in pain. As much as Chris tried to find comfort from his reasoning, it didn't mean he didn't care, because he did. He loved his brother in his own way.

"How's your Mom, Chris?" Dana asked.

"About the same," he replied. "She's hurting and I don't know when or if the pain will ever go away."

"I know I've told you this probably a hundred times already, if there is anything I can do…"

"I'll let you know," Chris replied. Forcing a smile on his face, he added, "How about we order, eat, and have some fun?"

"Here, here." The others cheered lifting their glasses to toast their evening out together. Chris lifted his too and once they all clinked glasses they began to settle in and chat while they waited for the waitress to return so they could order their dinner.

"Good morning, partner," Jeff said walking into the locker room.

"Morning," Chris replied glancing up from buttoning his uniform shirt.

"You okay?" Jeff asked.

"Yeah," Chris replied, "never better."

"Really, then why do I get the impression that something is wrong?"

"Then I'd have to say that maybe you over indulged last night and your brain isn't functioning properly."

"I'll have you know I only had two beers last night."

"Jeff, would you lighten up some?  I was only kidding about the indulging."

"Alright already. I guess there are days I take things way too seriously. Besides, you know the policy about coming into work with a hangover."

"You know Jeff, ever since you decided that it was time to take the plunge into marriage…"

"What?"

"Nothing."

"No way, man. You're not getting off this easily. Spill it."

"You're just…different, that's all."

"Different, as in how?"

"If I didn't know any better I'd swear you were my dad's son instead of me."

"And what's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know, but maybe…it's time for me to start thinking about my future too and take life a bit more seriously than I have since joining the department."

"You love her don't you?"

"I can't get much past you, can I?"

"Remember what you said last night Chris, life is way to short.  I saw that face you made.  Neither of us is twenty years old anymore…and one day…it will be all over."

"I know."

"So, when are you gonna ask her?"

"I haven't a clue."

"Good Morning people," Dooley said bursting into the locker room. "So what's new," he asked glancing back and forth between the paramedics.

"Roll call in five minutes."  The men heard Captain Lopez shout, alerting the men to stop and get their act together.

After the men changed into their uniforms, they assembled in front of the engines for the daily assignments and any news their Captain would pass along.

"Morning.  The news I have today concerns the paramedics directly but the rest of the station indirectly.  With our next shift, paramedic instructors will be riding along with the paramedics.  These ridealongs are to see the new protocols in action.  They are not going to be judging the actions of any of the paramedics.  The instructors have been out of the field for some time and the brass believes it will help everyone if they get their feet wet again.  They will not assist on any of the rescues or treatments unless it is the last resort.  They are just there to observe and their opinions, if offered, are to be taken seriously as these men know what they're talking about.  Eventually every shift and station will be visited by an instructor, but since there are only five of them, three of them will be starting this 'field obs' while the other two will remain behind to continue teaching."

Chris and Jeff exchanged looks.  They understood what the brass was doing, but they didn't really want anyone looking over their shoulder.

Marco saw the irritation on his men's faces.  "I know how you must feel.  I hate it when the Chief comes by even though he was once my own captain.  We don't like anyone messin' with our home.  But it will only be for a shift or two.  And think of it this way, the information the instructor takes back can only help the new recruits."

"So who's gonna ride with us, Cap?" Jeff asked.

"Captain John Gage," Marco answered.

Jeff moaned and Chris smiled.

Once Marco finished handing out the news and the station's assignments, the men set to work readying the equipment for the busy shift ahead. There was nothing routine about working a shift. There was no set schedule for meals or sleep. Even a simple bathroom break took a back seat at times. The days were by far the easiest to endure.  Not that the demands of their jobs weren't required as much as through the night, but during the day, they were more rested, more functional and more alert than during nighttime call outs.

The need for qualified emergency service personal had always been a necessity, but in recent years with the population and development growth over the entire region, their services were even more essential to the people of LACo. Some of the calls they responded to were for things as simple as reassurance, while other calls were complex full-blown rescues that left very little time to spare to save a life. Through it all, the men and women who worked for the fire department took great pride in performing their duties whether it was while working a rescue, a fire, bringing new life into the world, or continuing with on-going training to improve their skills.

The engine generally managed six to eight runs during a 24-hour shift while the squad generally received double that number.  At the end of the shift, the crew was more than happy to relinquish the equipment and the duties to the on-coming crew and make their way home for some much needed sleep and the hope that the recurring demons that occasionally invaded their dreams stayed away.

It was six o'clock in the evening and John Gage was still sitting in his office.  Roy walked by and noticed the light on so he knocked on the door and walked in.

"What's keeping you here so late, Johnny?"  Roy asked.

Johnny looked at his watched and realized what time it was.  "I can ask the same of you, Roy.  You should be home with Jo.  How is she, by the way?"

The smile that was on Roy's face slackened.  Even though he knew Johnny for more than twenty years, there were still things he had a difficult time talking about.  Johnny could sense the apprehension.  He reached into his bottom draw and pulled out a sacred bottle of scotch and two plastic cups and placed them on his desk.

"Sit down Roy," Johnny pointed to the chair.  Roy sat as Johnny poured the scotch.  "JoAnne's not doing well, is she?"

"No."  Roy took the cup Johnny offered and held it between his hands.

"And you're worried and don't know what to do."

"Yes."  Roy swallowed the shot.

"Do you think JoAnne would go for some therapy?  I'm sure we could find someone to help her.  She shouldn't be going through this alone."

"She's not going through this alone," Roy voiced.  "She's got me."

"Roy, that's not what I mean.  I know you've been there to support her but maybe she needs someone who's objective, you know, like a psychologist."

Johnny took a sip from his glass.

"I'd do anything for her, Johnny, if she'd just let me know what she wanted."

"Maybe, Roy, she doesn't know what she wants and she might need to be told to do this."

Roy thought about it for a moment and then his expression changed.  "So why are you here so late?"

That question caused Johnny to fill the glasses with more scotch.  "Jenny and I are at odds and you know how she gets when she can't get her way."

Roy smiled but saw that Johnny's expression didn't change.  "Well when she sets her mind to something, she goes for it full throttle.  I don't have to remind you of that!"  Roy softly laughed.

"Well this fight is about adopting a baby."

"Oh.  You were going to do that before Ryan died."

"Yeah."

"So now she wants to continue with the adoption."

"Yup."

"And I guess you're not so sure."

"You got it," Johnny gulped his drink.  "I'm having second thoughts about a baby at my age."

Roy laughed because he had the same thoughts months ago when he found out he was going to be a father again.  "I know what you mean.  The feedings, the diapers, yeah, I know."

"I just don't want to be a 50 year old  'new' daddy.  It's bad enough that I'm going to be in my late 60s or even 70's when Kaitlin gets married and I'll be lucky if I see a grandchild."  He looked at Roy and was sorry he said that knowing that Kaitlin would probably be his only grandchild.  "I'm sorry Roy.  I didn't mean it."

"So my daughter has thrown you out of your house, huh?"

Johnny laughed.  "Yeah, but at least tomorrow night I'll be at 51s.  I do my field obs with them.  Since I'm the leader of our small teaching pack, I get to go first."

"You'll be working with Chris."

"Yes, and Jeff."

Roy raised his glass to make a toast, "To field obs."

Johnny joined in the toasting and the two men laughed.

"Will JoAnne be okay when you're doing your overnighter?"

"Yeah, Jenny and Kaitlin will stay with her."

"Oh really.  I wonder when she was going to tell me.  Sometimes, Roy…."

"Sometimes what Johnny?  What do you want to do to my daughter?" Roy laughed.

Johnny's tense expression lightened up.  He stood up and patted Roy on the back.  "Let's leave and go home to our beautiful DeSoto/Gage women."

"I agree."

The two men left the office, walked to their cars, and headed home.

Dinner had been simple; a Caesar salad garnished with shrimp and sprinkled with fresh squeezed lemon and the conversation light. After spending a good portion of the evening on Boondocks veranda, a restaurant overlooking a portion of Santa Monica Bay, the couple enjoying each others company and sharing a bottle of wine, Chris and Meg chose to take a walk along the boardwalk together.

"What are you thinking about?" Meg asked tightening her hold on Chris' hand as they walked along the boardwalk.

"Nothing," he replied.

"Don't you give me that 'Medic Man'," she teased, "I can almost hear the gears turning in your head."

"You can, can you?" Chris replied.

"Yeah," she answered grinning. "So, what am I gonna hafta do, tickle you to make you talk," she laughed knowing his weakness for being tickled.

Gripping her hand tightly, Chris abruptly stopped and pulled her in close to him. Lifting his free hand to her face, he lightly brushed his thumb over her cheek then ran his fingers through her tresses. "You tickle me and that will be the last thing you do," he replied seriously.

Meg gazed into Chris' blue eyes. She had always found his serious side exciting and somewhat mysterious as she never knew when he was just teasing. It was part of what drew her too him, that and the fact he was alluring. "And just what do you plan on doing to me, if I tickle you?" she asked slowly running the tip of her tongue over her lips.

"Don't even try that with me?"

"What?"

"That thing you do. Tempting me with..."

"I don't know what you're talking about," she replied quickly. Pulling away from his grip she turned and quickly walked a few steps ahead of him. "You never did answer my question."

"And what question would that be," he asked jogging to catch up.

"What's on you mind?"

"Oh."

"Remember, you promised me, no secrets."

"I don't have any secrets from you," he replied. Grasping her arm, he stopped her from continuing along on the boardwalk. Turning her so he could look into her eyes, he said, "Meg…Megan…I want you."

"You have me, Chris," she replied.

He sighed. "I know, but I want more."

"What are you saying, Chris?"

Placing his hands on her shoulders, he closed his eyes and sighed. "This isn't going the way I wanted it to."

Meg could see nervousness and indecision etched on Chris' face. Something about this moment frightened her. Things had been going great between them since they met or so she thought. Chris was finally opening up; sharing his most personal thoughts with her most of the time. She knew there would always be some things he'd keep to himself or share only with Jeff. Certain things about the job she knew were better left at the station. But now, he seemed so distracted. She admired him for the way he always seemed to be in control of everything -  his life, his job, nothing seemed to faze him or at least nothing he'd allow people to see. It was rare that he'd shut her out and these few times were the times she'd worry about him the most.

'What's wrong,' she wondered. She didn't have to wait long.

"Megan. I really hate not seeing you everyday."

She smiled and brushed the back of her hand over his cheek. "Our professional lives kind of get in the way sometimes, don't they?"

"Yeah, they do," he replied with a sigh. Movement from behind her caught his eye. Glancing over her shoulder he noticed a couple getting up from a bench and walking away. Grasping her hand, he quickly guided her over to the bench then gestured for her to sit.

Still standing he ran his hand shakily through his hair.

"Chris, you're starting to scare me. What's wrong?" Meg asked with concern in her voice.

Dropping onto the bench beside her, he again sighed.

"I grew up seeing my mom and dad everyday, well at least my mom cause dad worked those 24-hour shifts. When they were together, I saw the love and the affection they held in their hearts for each other. Now mind you, as a kid, I never really understood that stuff. I mean, I had a couple of friends whose parents fought most of the time when they were together. I didn't understand that either cause here Jenny and I were living in an environment where there was love and very seldom a cross word was tossed around, at least when we were present."

Chris closed his eyes and shook his head. "It's funny you know, some people get along very well and others, I guess, that's one reason my job is so important. Both dad and mom were there for Jenny and me every step of the way. We had piano lessons, skating lessons, swimming lessons, little league, boy scouts, fishing and camping trips, you know the stuff.  Whenever we needed to talk to someone about something, no matter what it was, mom or dad was there. Even when I had to ask dad about sex," Chris blushed. "He answered my questions truthfully. But no matter what happened from day to day, year to year, my parents loved each other through thick and thin, through all the minor and major mishaps in life, and above all they were there for us, Jenny and me."

"Sounds like you had it good growing up compared to many of the kids out there."

"Yeah, I did," Chris confessed. "But no matter how good things were, I still saw the worry on my mom's face each time there was a major fire at a warehouse or a skyscraper, or when dad had to leave for days at a time to help with a brush fire. Then there were the few times over dad's career when he was injured and sometimes hospitalized. When I became an adult I made up my mind I wasn't gonna put anyone through that, the worry and the heartache. And I knew almost before I could read that I wanted a career in the Fire Department."

"That's understandable. Not all the time, but in many cases firefighters, like police officers come from a long line of career men, the father, the grandfather, the uncle…"

Chris nodded, "Then you understand how important my job is to me. It's not just the fact my dad was a paramedic."   He smiled taking great pride in his father accomplishments.  "…but the fact its part of who I am.  And…"

"…and it makes you feel wonderful helping people-something that's rare in today's society considering the 'what's in it for me' attitude so many people have."

Chris nodded.  "You seem to know me quite well."

"Well let's see, we've been going out now for what, eleven months, give or take a day or two? And we've confessed our sins to each other not to mention our triumphs and tribulations. So…"

"So…Meg…Megan…I want more."

"More…as in what?"

"You, me, us.  Together.  Forever!"

"What are you asking me Chris?"

"I love you Meg. I've never loved anyone like this before. We've shared so much already and I know we still have lots to give each other. I don't want to go home to an empty apartment anymore.  Not that I do that that often as it is, but I'd like to be able to climb into bed and inhale your scent even when you're not there to curl up with. I want see and touch your possessions, a reminder of you when you're away on assignment." Taking a deep breath he got up from the bench and knelt down.  He took Megan's hand in his and looked into her sparkling eyes. "Megan …will you marry me?"

"Oh!" she replied simply as she hadn't expected a marriage proposal this evening.

Worried that he may have 'jumped the gun' so to speak, he quickly added, "You don't have to give me an answer right away. Think about it and us before you make a decision." Standing up he looked off toward the ocean. The breeze picked up and several seagulls were flying over near the pier, looking and hoping for a scrap of food that might be tossed their way. Suddenly he could feel her near him, a closeness he came to relish as much as breathing.

"Yes," she whispered her voice low in his ear.

Turning he gazed into her face.

"I'll marry you," she added.

Closing his eyes, he tilted his head skywards and let out the breath he seemed to be holding then a smile formed on his face. "Yes," he shouted before looking back into her face. "Megan, you've made me the happiest man!"

"I know," she replied. "Mrs. Christopher DeSoto. That has a nice ring to it," she chuckled, "personally speaking, that is.  But I'm afraid when it comes to my professional life, I have to keep my name as it is now," she added winking.

Chris laughed then embraced her tightly. Right now, he felt ten feet tall and was happier than he could ever remember being. If Megan Hall wanted to be a woman of the new millennium and keep her name, he didn't have a problem with that. After all, time had changed him and his way of thinking and living compared to his father who grew up, married, and had children when life was much more simple and reformed.

The next morning, Jenny dropped Kaitlin off at daycare and headed to Rampart.  She barely spoke with Johnny the night before.  Although they shared a bed, she kept to 'her' side and didn't want to be near him.  Oh yes, she loved him but he infuriated her.  'Why was everything so difficult with him?'

She got to Rampart early and was sipping coffee in the employee cafeteria.  She knew Johnny would be at 51s overnight and she planned to take Kaitlin out shopping this evening, a girl's night out.  She was lost in thought when Dr. Forrestor approached.  "Mind if I join you?"

"Sure."

Jake Forrestor pulled out a chair and sat down.  He put a nickel on the table.  "Five pennies for your thoughts."  He smiled warmly at her.

"Oh nothing.  I was just thinking that I'd take my daughter out shopping tonight."

"Sounds like fun.  How old is she?"

Jenny was about to answer but decided not to.  She was leary of talking to people about Kaitlin since the kidnapping.  Everyone represented a threat.  "Don't take this wrong Dr. Forrestor, but I don't talk about my family."

Jake Forrestor gently touched Jenny's forearm.  "I understand.  I heard about Kaitlin, and please call me Jake."

Jenny wasn't surprised that Jake knew.  Hospital gossip was renowned.  Forrestor was relatively new to the hospital and didn't know many people.  He was just trying to be friendly.  Jenny looked at her watch and finished her coffee.

"I gotta go, Dr. Forrestor, um...Jake.  I promised Rachel I'd start a bit early."

"I understand, Jenny."  He stood up when she left the table.  He watched the way she moved, how her toned body looked in her hospital scrubs.  Yes, she looked good to him, but he reminded himself that she was married.

"Why are you so jumpy Chris?" Jeff asked.  The two were in the locker room changing into their uniforms.  This was to be the shift that John Gage would join them.

Chris looked over his shoulder hoping know one would be within earshot.  He leaned in closer to Jeff.  "I proposed to Megan last night."

"YOU WHAT?"

"Shhhh, keep it down.  I didn't buy her the ring, but we were at the beach and I dunno, I guess I just felt it deep down inside.  The thought of not having her in my life scared me more than marrying her, so I just proposed."  Chris blushed as he talked with Jeff.  He wondered if his dad had talked about serious issues with his 'Uncle Johnny' when they were the same age as he and Jeff were.

"Did you tell anyone yet?"

Chris shook his head, "No, I didn't tell anyone.  My mom hasn't been well since Ryan Scott's death, so I don't want to spring anything like this on her.  I'm going to wait until I'm off for three days and spend some time one on one with her.  Once I tell her, then I'll tell dad. And Jenny and Johnny will find out afterward.  And Megan promised not to tell anyone until we pick out the ring and we're going to do that tomorrow when my shift is over.  She's going to take the day off from work tomorrow and we'll go shopping for a ring."

"Wow Chris, you really shocked me."

"Roll call in five minutes!" Marco Lopez announced which made his men scurry to get their acts together to get ready for the business day.

"Jeff, PLEASE don't tell anyone.  I'm not ready for anyone here to know."

Jeff patted his partner on his back, "Don't worry, buddy, your secret is safe with me."

The two walked to the front of the squad and got in line along with their crewmates.  They heard laughter from Marco Lopez's office as the two laughing men walked toward the line.

"Gentlemen, in case you don't know," Marco announced, "this man to my right is Captain John Gage.  He is one of the original paramedics who started out in this station too many years ago. He's a good man who saved my life on several occasions."

Marco walked down the row of men introducing them to Johnny.  Although Johnny knew most of Station 51's A Shift, it was department protocol to go through this.

"I know you'll give him the same respect that you give to me.  He will be spending the entire shift with us, so Chris, show him which bunk is available.

"Yes Captain.  Right this way Captain Gage."  Chris walked toward the dorm leading Johnny.

"Chris, I think I remember my way around here.  It wasn't so long ago I was stationed here."  Johnny pointed to himself as they walked toward the dorm.

"I know that, sir, but as Captain Lopez said, we are to treat you the same way we treat him and that's with respect."  A slight smile appeared on Chris' face.

Johnny walked over to him and knocked the hat off his head and laughed.  "Captains get to do that, ya know."

Chris made a face.  Johnny's actions reminded him of all the years they played together as child and 'uncle'.  Sometimes Johnny inadvertently treated Chris as that child, or at least Chris felt that way.  Chris wondered if Johnny would ever see him as an equal, at least professionally.

"Jeff and I sleep here, where I believe you and Dad slept.  I have your old bunk.  If you want to sleep here tonight for old time's sake, I'll move."

Johnny shook his head no, "That's okay.  I can sleep in any open bunk."

After Johnny stowed his equipment he motioned for Jeff and Chris to follow him to Marco's office.  When the men entered Marco stood up to leave but Johnny motioned for him to stay.  "Marco, eh Captain Lopez, please stay."  Johnny and Marco exchanged smiles of an unknown secret the two shared many years ago.  "Chris, Jeff, please sit down."

Jeff and Chris did what was asked.  Johnny stood while Marco stayed behind his desk.

"I just want you two to know what's going to happen while this field observation takes place.  I'm here just for that, to observe you two in action."  He pointed at both men.  "What you do here in the station is none of my concern, but out in the field, I will be watching you for several reasons.  I want to see how our new procedures are doing in the field.  I also want to see if new processes should be developed.  I will not be offering any advice and won't interfere unless there's a dire crisis.  I'll be doing this field obs with other squads but chose you two first because I wouldn't be deemed intimidating; you are seasoned professionals."  Johnny relaxed his shoulders after giving his little speech.  "Do you have any questions for me?"

Chris and Jeff looked at each other and smiled.  Jeff spoke up, "You're not planning to drive the squad, are you?"

Marco laughed and Johnny looked indignant, but before he had a chance to reply, the tones sounded.

"Squad 51, sick child, 178 Bellmore, 1-7-8 Bellmore, timeout 8:30."

The four men exited Marco's office.  Marco acknowledged the call and handed the slip to Chris, who was driving the squad.  Jeff allowed Johnny to sit in the middle while he rode shotgun.

The squad exited the station.  Jeff pulled out the pocket map to find the location.  Johnny didn't want to interfere but having worked out of Carson for so many years, he knew his way around.  He bit his tongue so he wouldn't interupt the system that Chris and Jeff had set up.  Just as he told them, he was there to observe their field conduct and nothing more unless the action was life threatening.

The squad arrived at the house within five minutes.  Chris and Jeff ran to the squad's compartments to pull out their equipment.  Johnny followed them into the house whose door was opened.  A woman was on the floor giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a child.  Chris dropped the equipment to check the child.  The woman, who was the child's mother, was out of breath.

"He just started choking on something.  I tried to find what he swallowed, but he started turning blue."

Chris gave the child mouth-to-mouth while Jeff took the child's vitals.  Johnny stood off in the distance watching.  He had to detach himself from his parental side, knowing that his own daughter went through a similar episode when she swallowed a fifty cent piece.  Ever the professional, Johnny watched how Chris and Jeff performed.

Chris held a flashlight and looked down the child's throat.  "I see something."  He went into their equipment box and pulled out forceps.  With steady hands he was able to reach the item and pull it from the child's throat.  They all looked at a small toy soldier that this child somehow managed to swallow.

"Oh no.  How did he get that?"  The mother started sobbing.

Johnny walked over to her to comfort her.  "Ma'am, why don't you give these men some room to work."  He helped her get up and settled her onto the couch.

"Does he have any allergies or medical conditions?"  Jeff asked.

"No, he's healthy."

"How old is he?"

"He's twenty-six months old."

"Okay, he'll be okay ma'am."  Jeff stated.  Chris continued mouth-to-mouth, while Jeff contacted the hospital for additional guidance.

After the initial crisis was handled, Jeff went in the ambulance with the baby.  Chris and Johnny followed in the squad.  The ride in was quiet.  Both men were lost in their own thoughts about this child who almost suffocated.  The squad parked next to the ambulance.  Chris ran out from the vehicle to help Jeff bring the child into a treatment room.  Johnny followed them in, but looked to see where Jenny was.  He wasn't surprised to find her in the treatment room assisting Dr. Morton.  Part of Johnny's assessment was to watch the paramedics interact with the doctors in the emergency room.

Johnny stayed out of the way and watched Chris and Jeff assist Jenny and Mike Morton.  It was one of the few times he could also watch Jennifer in action.  She avoided his eye contact as she helped Mike with the baby.  Chris and Jeff were no longer needed and left the treatment room.  Jenny looked up and saw Johnny looking at her.  She knew he wanted, no needed, to speak with her.  She raised her hand and signaled three and pointed upstairs, meaning she'd be able to talk with him in three minutes in his office.  Johnny left the treatment room and walked to Jeff and Chris who were replenishing their supplies.

"I gotta go upstairs for a couple of minutes.  Gimme a handi-talkie so if you get a run I'll make it down to the squad."  He took the handi-talkie from Chris' hand and didn't wait for an answer, but turned and walked to the elevator.

"Wow, what bug crawled up his…" Jeff couldn't complete his sentence as Chris gave him an evil look.

Johnny got to his office and looked through some of the mail that was deposited on his desk.  He knew Roy would be with a class now, which was good.  This would give him a small amount of time to speak with Jenny.

After reading his mail, Jenny knocked on the slightly opened door and walked in.  Johnny stood up and walked to her.  He placed a kiss on her cheek.  She wrapped her arms around him pulling him into a hug.  Johnny wasn't expecting this and was pleasantly surprised.  He returned her hug, holding her.

"I miss you Angel.  I hate it when we disagree."  He savored the moment holding her in his arms, smelling her perfume and feeling her soft body leaning into his.

"I hate it too Johnny.  I just…"  Johnny didn't let her finish as he placed his finger over her lips.  Tears started welling in her eyes.  Johnny tilted her head back and kissed her tenderly and Jenny responded with passion.  He had to pull back from her.

"Whoa there Angel.  Any more of that and we'll both be in trouble."

Jenny blushed and grinned.  "Well I always had fantasies of doing it here in your office and I know the door locks."  She secured the bolt on the door and pushed Johnny back against it, catching him by surprise.

"Jennifer Gage! You stop... you stop that!"  Johnny stammered as Jennifer expertly maneuvered her hands below Johnny's belt.

He was soon to have an unforgettable moment when the handi-talkie squawked to life calling Station 51 to a building collapse.  From the sounds of it, it was a major disaster.  Jennifer regained her composure but her cheeks were reddened from passion.

"I gotta go." Johnny said catching his breath.  He kissed Jenny on her mouth and ran from his office.  Jenny stayed behind for several minutes longer to get herself together.

***
The squad arrived at a scene that had more than ten trucks scattered about.  The battalion chief, Hank Stanley, was supervising the rescue.  He was speaking with Marco when Johnny, Chris and Jeff approached.

"We have a report of several people trapped in the lower lobby.  Chris, you and Jeff hook up with station 86's staff to locate those people."  Chris and Jeff acknowledged their chief's direction and ran to the squad to get their equipment.  Marco returned to his engine to get his gear to help out with search and rescue.

"How many squads do you have here Chief?"  Johnny asked.

"Just 51.  There are no others available due to that pile up on the 405 and the fire in Topanga.  I might just have to put you to work, John."  Hank smiled and patted Johnny on the back.

Johnny walked over to the squad.  At least he could get the equipment out and notify Rampart of their situation.  "Rampart base this is rescue 51."  And old warm feeling came over himself when he uttered those words; words that he hadn't said in close to ten years.

"Rampart base, go ahead 51."  It was Jenny's voice responding.  She must have been confused as to why Johnny would be setting up the contact.

"Be advised Rampart that we are at the scene of a building collapse.  Unknown number of victims.  We're in the search and rescue phase now.  This is just to let you know."

"Any idea of how many victims, 51?"  Jenny asked.  Dr. Forrestor was standing beside her listening.

"None at this time, but we expect at least six people.  Also be aware that 51's is the only paramedic unit here due to the accident on 405 and the brush fire in the canyon.  If needed, I'll assist."

"Ten-four 51."  Jenny broke contact and grimaced, knowing it was Jeff and Chris at this rescue scene.

"Who was at the other end, Jenny?"

"Oh that was John Gage.  He's doing his field obs with them."

Forrestor shook his head.  "Well at least they'll have a third set of hands, and experienced ones, if they need it."  Jake saw the concern on Jenny's face so he put his arm around her.  "Don't worry about them; they'll be alright."  He smiled at her, but Jenny withdrew away from him.  She felt Dr Forrestor was crowding her space.

"If you want, I'll stand by here, Dr. Forrestor."  She didn't make eye contact with him.

"Sure Jenny if that will make you feel better.  I'll let Mike know what we have coming in."  Jenny bristled as Dr Forrestor walked by.  There was something about him that made her feel uncomfortable, but she couldn't figure what it was.  It didn't matter know.  Her attentions had to be on any of the potentially injured people from that building collapse.

***
"See anything Chris?"  Jeff asked as they gingerly walked along the first floor or what used to be the first floor.  It partially collapsed to the basement and the remaining parts of it were still unsteady.

Jeff looked back at Chris as he answered. "No nothing.  We should try to make our way down."

Jeff and Chris cautiously walked toward the collapsed area.  The building moaned again and a soft rumble was felt.  Within seconds the air horn of one of the engines blasted signaling that all men should evacuate the building.  Chris and Jeff understood what that meant and turned around to retrace their steps.

Their worst fears were realized as the building shuddered and another section collapsed.  The floor that they were own couldn't hold the weight and collapsed throwing Jeff and Chris into the basement.

***
"There's been another collapse!"  Marco shouted.

"Is everyone accounted for?"  Hank asked.  Headcounts were taken and Marco realized that two of his men weren't out of the building.  He ran over to Hank.

"Jeff and Chris are missing."

Upon hearing that Johnny left the triage area he had set up.

"Where were they last?"  Hank asked.

"They were on the north side of the first floor, making their way down to the collapse.  I can't raise them on the handi-talkie."  For emphasis, Marco tried again but only heard static.

Hank realized that two of his men were most likely injured or even dead.  He furrowed his brows.  "Get the men together Marco and shore up what you can.  We'll get some more help and we'll find them."

Johnny ran to the squad and put on an extra turnout coat and his helmet.  Hank saw him.

"And where the hell do you think you're going?"

"I'm going to help."  The emotion was written all over this face.

"John, I don't have to remind you that you are no longer allowed to do rescue.  Not with your hip, leg and back problems."

Johnny took the helmet off and ran his fingers through his hair.  "What am I suppose to do, Hank?  Let them die?"

"No John, they're not going to die and you're not going to help them by hurting yourself.  Right now you are the only qualified medical man on this scene.  You are ordered to stand down."

The two men locked eyes but Johnny understood what Hank meant.

"I'll stand down,
Chief, but if I'm needed there, you will not stop me."

Johnny walked over to the biophone to update Rampart.  "Rampart base this is rescue 51."

"Go ahead 51,"  Jenny responded.

Johnny wasn't happy that Jenny was on the other end.  "Eh, we have a secondary collapse here.  We have a code I times two."

"Understood 51."

Softly Johnny said, "Jen, it's Chris and Jeff."

She took a deep breath as the grim news sunk in.  Mustering her strength she replied, "Ten-four 51.  We'll be ready."

She had to get her act together.  Jeff and Chris would need her once they were found.

***
The sound of debris settling was all that Chris heard after the initial roar subsided.  He took an inventory of his body parts to determine what injuries he had, if any.  His right shoulder, arm and wrist hurt, so he figured he had several breaks.  His right eye was partially shut do to some swelling.  The worst part was that his legs were pinned under some cement slabs.  He tried to look around to find Jeff, but couldn't see him in his line of vision.

Chris coughed, "Jeff, JEFF are you okay?"

Jeff coughed, "What happened?"

"The floor gave way, I guess."  Chris coughed again and moaned from his pain.  "Are you okay?"

"Not sure.  My legs are pinned and my right foot feels real cold.  How about you?"

"I think I broke my right arm and my shoulder.  They hurt like hell.  Can't believe it's my right arm.  Glad I'm a lefty."  Chris heard Jeff cough.  "Stay with me pardna."

"Okay plebe."  That was their nicknames.  Just as Roy and Johnny were Pally and Junior, Chris and Jeff were Pardna and Plebe.  Jeff continued speaking but decided to change the subject to distract them both from their situation. "So what kinda ring were you gonna buy Meg?"

Chris laughed.  "I thought I told you I don't wanna talk about it."

There was a pause and the only audible sound was debris settling.

"Chris, I'm scared.  My foot's real cold.  Not like my left.  I can't sit up.  I can't move.  Dammit!  Where are they?"

Chris could feel Jeff's panic and it was beginning to get to him.  He remembered what his dad told him if he ever felt anxious.  "Chris, there may be times when your life or the life of your partner or crewmates is in danger.  Just remember that your friends will do anything and everything they can to make sure you are safe.  If you keep this in mind, you won't get scared.  I can't tell you how many times your 'Uncle' did this to me and I'd yell at him for scarin' me and you know what he said?  He told me he knew I'd be there for him.  And Chris, the few times I was hurt, Johnny was there for me.  It's our custom, it's a firefighter's creed."

Chris took some solace remembering what his father told him.  "Jeff, it'll be okay.  They're gonna get us. I think I can hear movement."

Jeff settled down.  "Yeah, I think I hear it too.  But my foot, Chris, my foot…"  He trailed off.

"Jeff, it'll be okay."  What else could he say?  Based upon what little he knew, he was worried for his friend too.

The two men continued to chat about stuff to distract them from their very serious situation.

Marco was the first firefighter to reach them.  When he saw Jeff, he sent one of his men to tell Hank Stanley to get John Gage.  He saw that Jeff's right foot was hanging off, only attached by what appeared to be several tendons.  The beam on his legs was acting as a tourniquet or Jeff would have bleed to death.  Marco ran to Jeff first.

"How you doing Jeff?"

"Cap, I'm cold.  How's my foot?"

Marco paled at the question being asked.  "We're getting Johnny here to help out."

"It's that bad."  It was more of a statement than a question.

Marco answered honestly, "Yes.  Let me check on Chris.  Fred will stay with you."

Marco slowly got up and made his way over to Chris.  "How are you Chris?"

Chris smiled at seeing Marco.  "My shoulder and arm are busted and I probably got a concussion.  How's Jeff Cap?"

"Not good.  We're gonna get Johnny in here.  All the other squads are tied up."

***

The firefighter Marco dispatched ran out to Hank Stanley and told him what Marco wanted.  Hank cursed and ran over to Johnny.

"John, Marco needs you in there.  Jeff's foot is severed.  The beam on his leg is acting as a tourniquet."

"And Chris?"

"Don't know, but Jeff needs you now."

"Understood.  I'm gonna need help carrying the equipment."

"Whatever you need, pal."

Johnny grabbed the equipment and motioned to what he needed carried in.  He steeled himself for what he was about to see.  It had been some time since he worked a rescue and of all rescues, it had to be his best friend's son, his brother-in-law.

Marco walked out to meet Johnny and help carry the stuff.

"How are they Marco?"

"Chris is okay except for a possible broken arm.  He might also have a concussion.  We're working on getting him out.  It's Jeff I'm worried about.  It's his foot."  Marco was glum.

Johnny would have liked to run to where Jeff lay prone, but the tenuous building structure forbade it.  He got there as quickly as he could.

"Marco, get me some ice.  Lots of it."  Johnny looked at Jeff's foot, hanging on by one tendon.  There was little or no blood, which was both good and bad.  The beam was indeed acting as a tourniquet and kept Jeff from bleeding out.  The drawback was that it also kept blood from circulating in his leg compromising it's viability.

"Cap'n Gage," Jeff said through gritted teeth.

"Jeff."

"How bad is it?  Don't lie to me."

"It's bad Jeff.  I'm going to put a tourniquet on your leg cause when we lift the beam off…"

"I know, Cap.  I just…"  Jeff couldn't finish.

Marco came over to help Johnny.  "Any chance of saving it?" he asked softly.

Johnny shook his head no.  He took Jeff's vital signs and scribbled them down.  "Marco I'm gonna need help.  You up to it?"

"Yes, of course."

After Johnny prepared Jeff, he went over to Chris to see how he was doing.

"How's Jeff?"  His eyes bored into Johnny's.

"Chris, I just want to check you out then I'll go back to Jeff."

Chris got angry and with his left arm, grabbed onto Johnny.   "Tell me, dammit."

Johnny let out a big sigh.  He knew how he'd feel if it was Roy in the same situation.  "Chris, Jeff is going to lose his foot, maybe more."  Using his left arm, Chris covered his face.  After checking Chris out, Johnny said, "Your vitals are okay.  Once I've got Jeff situated, I'll be back to take care of you.  Hang in there Chris."  Johnny gently touched Chris' left shoulder.

Johnny went to the biophone to report the info to Rampart.  "Rampart this is 51."  He rubbed his head with his hand, the green pen sticking out of it.

Jenny responded.  "Go ahead 51."

"Rampart, we have two victims.  Victim number 1 is a 29 year old paramedic.  Probable broken or dislocated shoulder and arm.  Vitals are stable at this time and he is in moderate pain.  Victim number 2 is a 31 year old paramedic.  His right foot is detached and hanging on by what is most likely the calcaneal tendon.  There is diminished circulation in that leg.  Tourniquet is in place pending removal of beam. Ice has been applied.  Vitals are….."  By telling Jenny the ages, she'd know which paramedic sustained which injuries.

"Stand by 51."  Jenny gave the information to Dr Forrestor who motioned for Mike Morton to review it with him.  Jenny got out of the way so Morton could give directions.

"John, is any part of the ankle joint intact?"

"Negative Rampart."

"He's gonna have to remove the foot," Morton said to Forrestor.  Jenny remained stone-faced hearing what her husband would have to do.  She knew he could do it, but the emotional side affects might be hard to deal with.

"Johnny, remove the foot.  Wrap it in a sterile sheet moistened with saline and pack it in ice.  For patient number one ...."

Johnny sighed, "Ten four Rampart."  Johnny knew that as soon as the beam was removed, Jeff would pass out.  That would be the good part.

"Marco, I'm gonna need your help now."  Jeff was silently crying as Johnny prepared the IV.  In all of his years as an active paramedic, Johnny never felt so awful.  "Jeff, the IV will help you relax.  There's some diazepam in it.  Once the beam is off, you know you'll pass out.  Then, I'm gonna remove your foot."

"'Kay."  Jeff said.  His body was shaking from fear and the wearing off of adrenaline.

Johnny checked the tourniquet one last time then gave the okay for the beam to be removed.  Jeff let out a scream then passed out.  Johnny checked Jeff's vital signs and had them relayed to Rampart.  Morton instructed Johnny on how to proceed.  With Marco by Johnny's side, Johnny severed the remaining tendon.  He carefully and quickly wrapped the stump and the foot in sterile sheets and packed ice around both.  Jeff was placed on a gurney and was surrounded by his fellow shift mates.

Johnny wiped the sweat off his brow and moved on to Chris.  "It's over Chris."  Johnny readied the IV and inserted the needle into Chris' left arm and taped it.  Johnny took another set of vital signs.  "There's some morphine in the IV Chris.  You eyes are equal and reactive so I don't think you have a concussion.  I'm going to splint your arm and shoulder.  You know that's gonna hurt.  I'm sorry."

In a voice that reminded Johnny of Chris as a child, he said, "Okay Johnny."  Johnny's stomach was still in knots.  Chris let out a scream when Johnny set the shoulder and splinted it along with his arm.  All the rescue workers surrounding them winced in sympathy for another of their wounded co-workers.

"Help me get him on the gurney.  Marco I'll need help putting the equipment in the ambulance."

"Anything you need Johnny."  He didn't envy his friend the horrific task he had just completed and wanted to make the remainder of the job as easy as possible.  Marco ordered his men to help Johnny move Chris and Jeff into the waiting ambulance.  Johnny settled into the vehicle and re-checked Jeff's vital signs.  He picked up the biophone and relayed the latest information.  "Rampart, squad 51 en-route."

"Ten four 51,"  Jenny stated.

Johnny could hear the quaver in her voice.  Some could argue the waver was caused by the biophone transmission, but Johnny knew Jenny and could tell she was scared.  He couldn't deal with his own emotions at the moment.  Jeff, Chris, Jenny, Roy and JoAnne would need him to be strong now.

***
Jenny went back to the base station and dialed her dad's extension.

"Roy DeSoto."

"Hi Dad."

"What's up Jenny?"  Roy knew Jenny never called him during work.  Sure they'd catch a coffee break if she had the time.  Lunch was even rarer so a phone call meant something was wrong.

"They're bringing Chris and Jeff in.  They were involved in a building collapse.  Chris has a possible broken shoulder/arm, I'm not sure.  Jeff, eh Jeff's foot was amputated."

"Oh no."  Roy looked at his watch.  He had about twenty minutes before his next class.  He was actually subbing for Johnny. "Johnny," he said softly realizing Johnny was with them.

"Johnny's okay, dad.  Actually, he's the one who took care of them.  Dad, he had to amputate Jeff's foot."

"Are you okay, little one?"

"Now, yes, but I don't know how much longer.  Morton wants me with Jeff.  I haven't even called Megan or Dana.  I'm not sure if I should."

"No Jenny, that's Marco's responsibility.  He'll need to do that.  I'm gonna come down."

"I know, dad.  Chris'll be in two and Jeff'll be in seven."  Jenny hung the phone up and went to the ambulance bay door to wait.

Roy stood up then paused.  He wondered if he should call JoAnne.  Then he thought it would be better to wait until he knew more information.  She wouldn't be in any condition to drive, so he'd go home to pick her up.  Roy wrote a note and placed it on the door to the classroom, stating if he wasn't in class fifteen minutes after starting, then it was cancelled.

***
Megan was in the newsroom when one of the interns handed her a note about the collapse.  They all knew she was dating a fireman and some even knew what station he was out of.  Although the teletype didn't say which engine companies, she knew enough from the location of the collapse that 51 was involved.  One thing Chris showed her during their first meeting was how wide an area one two person squad handled.  She was amazed at how much responsibility these two men had.  Her knees weakened.  The teletype read that two paramedics were injured and being taken to Rampart and a paramedic captain who was on scene for training purposes rode in with them.  She knew then, it was Chris.

Megan went to her cubicle to grab her stuff and told her boss she was heading over to Rampart.  When she got to her car, she grabbed her cell phone and dialed the hospital.

"Please connect me with Jennifer DeSoto."

"What department?"

"Emergency."

"One moment."

The phone rang seven times before it was picked up.  "Rampart emergency, Helen Ames speaking."

"Hi Helen, I'm trying to get a hold of Jennifer DeSoto."

"I'm sorry, but she's in with a patient."

"Is she with Chris?"

"Chris who?  Who is this?"

"My name's... oh never mind.  If you see her in the next ten minutes, tell her Meg is on her way over."  Megan disconnected the phone.  She drove her sports car as fast as the law would allow, to Rampart hospital.
