Author's note: I would like to note that certain details and conversations in this story were gathered out of two episodes of Emergency. Thanks to these people, their initial work helped me considerably to complete this story. This story is an alternative to what actually happened in the episode "The Promotion". Career Move By, Betty Stull A nervous knot formed in the pit of Roy's stomach as he followed the rest of the crew into Captain Stanley's office. Excitedly everyone, but Roy milled, around the desk wishing to hear the results of the engineer's exam. Chet too was in the running for a spot on the list. Unlike Roy, Chet was eager to know his results. Stanley continued to talk to the chief on the phone, as Roy slowly walked toward his desk. Hank paused his conversation then looked up, "Roy! Congratulations!" he said, handing his paramedic a slip of paper he had just ripped off the pad that lay on his desk. It held the results of Roy's engineer's exam. Roy stared at the piece of paper as if in disbelief that he had done so well. Stoker stood behind Roy glancing over his shoulder so could he read the results. "9th! Beautiful! Welcome to the club," he said giving Roy a pat on the shoulder. Roy momentarily glanced at Mike then returned his attention to the paper he held in his hand. "You'll make engineer by next month. Congratulations!" Marco added enthusiastically giving Roy a couple of slaps on the arm. Roy quickly glanced at the firefighter, flashed a slight grin then again returned his attention back to the paper he held in his hand. The time had come. A decision would have to be made. Roy now had to weigh out the factors. His family, and the paramedic work he loved, promoted, and fought to create over accepting the promotion to engineer. He needed to settle his mind, to be sure, that a career move at this time was indeed for the best. And Roy knew, that the decision could not be made with haste. Already pondering the situation, Roy occasionally glanced in Stanley's direction. Hank, still on the phone continued his conversation with the chief, seeking out Chet's exam results. The nervous knot in the pit of Roy's stomach continued to grow. It began to grip his inner being like a vice, threatening to dissolve his very existence. Roy had to vacate the room. Johnny sensed Roy's anguish the moment his partner had left the room. Not waiting to discover Chet's exam results, Johnny followed Roy out into the bay. Certain that his partner was already having doubt's, Johnny was determined to be nothing but a good friend to Roy, to be his confidant. Johnny wouldn't say anything to sway his best friend's mind one-way or the other. Forcing a brief smile on his face, Johnny walked up behind Roy, "What's wrong?" He asked, stuffing his hands into his pants pocket. Although he was happy for Roy, inwardly a small part of Johnny hurt, knowing he was going to lose his partner now. Glancing up at his friend, then back to the small piece of paper in his hands Roy replied, "how would you like to leave the Paramedics? That's what I'm meant to do now, I guess." Before Johnny could respond, the others walked out of Stanley's office. Chet was his shaking his head and grumbling about his results, 74th position on the list. Marco tried to reassure his friend that being on the list was an accomplishment. Johnny stepped back, so the trio of firefighters could walk past and into the kitchen. Once they were out of sight, Johnny resumed the conversation with Roy. "Well! Ah! If you feel that way, why didya take the test for?" Roy glanced up at his friend and shook his head. "Right now I couldn't tell ya." Silence developed between the two men before Roy trudged into the kitchen. Johnny briefly remained next to the communication station somewhat perplexed. He knew that staying with the paramedics meant no advancement in pay. Roy was a married man with a growing family, growing responsibilities. Johnny knew Roy had considered all this before he studied and took the exam. Johnny had even encouraged Roy, helped him to study, to prepare to go forth. The only thing Johnny could figure at this point was the fact that Roy just loved being a paramedic. Inside the kitchen, the two friends parked themselves on the table. Johnny chuckled slightly. "I wonder whom I'm going to get for a new partner when you get moved up," he said slapping Roy on the back. "Well, maybe I won't." Roy replied. "Well! You going to pass up a promotion?" Johnny asked, as he picked over the skin on his fingers. "I don't have to take it, ya know." Roy stated. "No! That's true. What did Joanne say?" Johnny queried. "Well! She always said as long as I make the money it was up to me to decide." Roy replied. "Ah! Well, just don't do anything foolish. Think about it." Johnny said. "I'm going to have too." Roy answered The conversation ended there with the klaxons sounding, sending the station out to a multiple MVA. Now, Roy had something else to concentrate on, something other than his current problem. ~*~*~*~*~ Before the shift was complete, Roy made his decision. He decided to accept the promotion. Once Roy told his partner of his decision, he decided to make his last few shifts as a paramedic worthwhile, giving the program and his partner the best that he had to offer. Unsure of when it would happen, Roy knew that at some point in his future, he would no longer be a paramedic nor part of 51's crew. ~*~*~*~*~ Three weeks after finding out the results of his exam, Roy found Captain Stanley waiting for him as he and Johnny returned from a mid morning run. When the squad came to a full stop, Hank rapped on the hood and spoke, "Roy, Pal, could I speak to you for a minute in the office?" Hank gave both his paramedics a concerned look before retreating back inside his office. "I wonder what's up?" Johnny asked, full of his usual curiosity. "I don't know, I guess I'll soon find out," Roy answered getting out of the squad. A troubled thought settled into Johnny's mind as he headed for the dayroom. The look on Cap's face bothered him. He hoped whatever was going on, Roy would fill him in on it later. Johnny only hoped it was something he'd want to hear about. Sighing, Roy rapped on the open door so he could grab Hank's attention. The nervous knot in the pit of Roy's stomach returned as he walked into the office. Deep down, Roy was certain about what Hank wanted to see him about. It had something to do with his promotion. Once Roy finally made the decision, only part of him was looking forward to advancing his career. In his mind, Roy knew the decision he made was the right one. With the increase in salary, Roy wouldn't have any worries about providing a good future for his family, a future he had to continually think seriously about. It was the emptiness he now held in his heart the disturbed him. Roy knew that once he accepted his new assignment, he would no longer be a paramedic nor would he work with his partner again. Hank looked up from the papers he held in his hand, "Come in Roy and would you please close the door behind you." Without a word Roy did as he was told. The knot in his stomach grew worse. Roy tried hard to look and sound cheerful when he faced his Captain. Taking a deep breath Roy spoke, "What's up Cap?" Hank stood beside his desk holding a sheet of paper. In his professional tone, Hank answered, "your transfer came through this morning. Starting next shift, you'll report to 45's to take up the Engineering position there. Here! You'll need this, Roy. It's your paperwork," he said, handing the sheet of paper to him. Somewhat overwhelmed from the news, Roy took the proffered paperwork then settled into a near by chair. The smile that Roy tried hard to keep on his face dissolved as he stared at the paper. "Congratulations, Roy." "Thanks Cap," Roy replied with melancholy. Hank wasn't blind to the fact that Roy seemed a little less than thrilled about the news. He worked with this crew for too long, not to know when something was bothering one of them. "I trust that everything is okay? I am to assume that this promotion was what you wanted. Right?" Even Roy's eyes emitted anguish. Roy cracked a slight smile, "Yeah, Cap, it is. This, happened a lot faster than I thought it would, that's all." Holding the paperwork up, "With this, being an Engineer is now a reality. It's also going to be a bit hard to leave here." "I understand, Pal. Believe me, I understand." Hank did understand all too well. He had been in Roy's position in the past. Although he had never been a paramedic with a partner, he did work closely with one crew before becoming an Engineer then moving onto a new station and new crew. Then, when he became a Captain he moved again, to a new station and new crew. Hank prided himself about how well his crew at 51's worked together. They had been united for a long time. But now one of his crewmembers was moving on. Even though there would be a new man to fill Roy's spot, Hank knew an empty place would be held in each of his crewmen's hearts with Roy's departure. That was especially going to ring true for John Gage. Inwardly, Hank wondered how Johnny was going to handle the changes. Johnny was a person who relished having things run with some sort of continuity. Although Johnny had worked professionally with any replacement that subbed for Roy, he was always thankful when his best friend returned to work, by his side in the squad. Now Johnny was going to have a permanent replacement for Roy. He would have to adjust. Hank's next step was to speak to the other half of his paramedic team. "Roy, would you tell Johnny I would like to speak to him, please?" Hank stated with a slightly somber look on his face. "Cap, could I break the news to Johnny first. I think he would want to hear it from me," Roy asked a bit choked up. Roy knew exactly how Johnny was going to take the news. He would put on his best face and try hard to smile. He would even congratulate Roy on the quick promotion. But inside he knew Johnny would be torn up and hurting. The team they created together after the paramedic program was put in place was coming to an end. People told them on several occasions, that they were the best team in LACo and that they worked well together. Now, the two best friends would not be working together as partners any more after this shift was complete. "Okay Roy, but I still have to speak to Johnny. I need to fill him in on whom his new partner will be starting next shift," Hank sighs. Roy and Hank briefly locked eyes, before Roy stood and left the office. Roy stuffed his papers into his pocket as he headed straight for the kitchen. He desperately needed a good strong cup of coffee before he filled Johnny in on the latest news. Inside the kitchen, Mike was beginning preparations for lunch. Marco and Chet were both reading and sharing parts of the daily newspaper at the table. Johnny was standing with his back against the cupboard, his mind deep in thought with a cup of coffee held in mid air. Roy approached his partner, "How's the coffee?" Breaking from his reverie, Johnny looked at his partner, "Huh. Did you say something Roy?" "Yeah, I ask you how's the coffee?" As Roy gestured to the cup in Johnny's hand. Johnny snorted, "barely drinkable. I think this pot needs to be labeled toxic substances." Johnny chuckled before turning serious, "So what did Cap want anyway?" Roy laughed, "Nothing like getting to the point, eh Johnny." "Well you know me Roy, I kind of like knowing what's going on around here." Johnny answered with a grin. Chet watched the show going on between 51's paramedic's from his seat at the table with great interest. He could tell there was something big between them. To him, both Johnny and Roy were acting like they had something to discuss with each other, but would rather avoid it. He thought it might be a good time to try to spice things up a bit by getting on Johnny's case some. Getting up from his place at the table, Chet approached them with his usual zeal. "Isn't that the truth, Gage? Nosy, kind of fits you. Maybe that's what we should call you from now on." "Chet, get a life and stop listening in on other peoples' conversations," Johnny replied gruffly. Chet looked at his favorite pigeon, "Are we touchy today Gage?" "If I am, it's only because you're in my face," Johnny snapped. Before Chet could retaliate with another snide remark toward Johnny, Roy piped up, "Chet, how about you go polish the Engine?" Roy had also placed a look on his face that said 'you had better leave now or else, Chet' as he spoke. Roy hoped the expression on his face was enough to stop a pending squabble between his partner and Chet. The one thing about the promotion and moving to another station that had going for it, was the fact that Roy would miss out on the bickering that arose between Johnny and Chet on a regular basis. Although the idea was appealing, Roy wasn't too sure that missing out on the exchanges was really such a great thing. He knew his partner all too well. He knew that Johnny was a bit naive and gullible. He knew that Johnny would often back himself in a corner as far as Chet was concerned. Chet being Chet, always took advantage of Johnny's innocence. Roy was certain that he would miss being able to come to Johnny's rescue, when the chips were down. Taking note of the look that came over Roy's face, Chet felt he had better back off for the time being. He didn't have to be a genius to know that the issue pending between Johnny and Roy was big and if he valued his reprieve from latrine duty, he better walk away from Johnny now. Smiling and without saying another word, Chet turned around and quickly walked out of the kitchen in order to find something constructive to do until lunch was served. Once Chet left, Roy motioned for Johnny to follow him out behind the Station. Roy needed some privacy to talk to his best friend. He wanted to break the news about his leaving away from lurking ears. Johnny didn't need words to be spoken to know that Roy had something important to speak to him about. One thing Johnny had come to learn about his best friend was that he was a private man. The two of them held private conversations at the station isolated from the others on several occasions. Roy walked over to where he had his pickup parked. Lowering the tailgate, he hoisted his backside onto it and then motioned for Johnny hop up and join him. Johnny lagged behind Roy by a few steps. He stopped when Roy lowered the tailgate and hopped onto it. When Roy offered Johnny the seat next to him, Johnny declined. He knew from the way Roy was acting that he was sure he wasn't going to like the pending conversation. "I think I'll stand Roy," Johnny said stuffing his hands deep into his pant's pockets. Johnny looked everywhere but at his best friend. "So what's on your mind?" Roy studied his partner. He could already see the hurt emitting out from Johnny's eyes. Even the usual crooked grin Johnny wore on his face faded since they first spoke inside the kitchen. "It's about why Cap wanted to see me in his office." Johnny kicked a small stone that lay on the ground with his foot. "That's what I figured. So tell me, do I really want to know what the two of you talked about?" Roy sighed, "probably not, but you have to be told and I wanted to be the one to do it." Johnny didn't need to hear anymore, he knew exactly what was coming. They both knew that this day would arrive once Roy had the results of his Engineering exam and acknowledged his acceptance. Once an engineering position came available, he would take it. "So, when are you leaving?" "This will be my last shift here. Cap gave me my paperwork when I was in his office," Roy replied pulling the papers out of his shirt pocket. "Where are you going to be stationed at?" Johnny asked still not really looking at Roy. His eyes were slightly downcast and his face showed obvious anguish about the news. "Over at 45's, A-shift to be exact," Roy answered, perking up some. He tried hard to brighten up the situation between them. "So I guess I will still see you from time to time then when our two stations get called out together." Johnny said with a fake chuckle. Pulling his hands from his pockets, Johnny finally looked at his best friend. "I'm going to miss not having you around," Johnny whispered. "Johnny, just because I'm moving on with my career doesn't mean we can't still be friends and do things off the job together." "I know that Roy. Hey! Congratulations! If anyone deserves this, it's you," Johnny replied forcing a smile to his face and proffering his hand to Roy. Roy graciously accepted Johnny's hand. The handshake was a sign for both of them that their friendship was still in place. "Cap also needs to speak to you, too." Johnny laughed falsely, "I suppose he needs to fill me in on who I'll be working with from here on out?" "Yeah! Hey do you want me to tag along?" Roy asked jumping off the back of his truck. Johnny shook his head, "Na, I think I can manage on my own. I guess I had better start getting used to it considering I'm going to be senior partner after today." "And you'll even get to drive the squad too whenever you want," Roy added with a chuckle, giving Johnny a little slap on the back. Johnny joined in and chuckled too about Roy's little statement. It was a well-known fact that Roy was the one that drove the squad most of the time. Not because Johnny couldn't handle driving, but because he made one hot shotgun giving out directions when they were on a run. After sharing a laugh or two, both paramedics trudged back inside the station. Johnny walked off in the direction of his Captain's office and Roy returned to the kitchen to check on lunch. Johnny approached Cap's office with a little less bounce in his step than usual. After he gave a rap in the door, he walked inside knowing that Hank was expecting him. "You wanted to see me Cap?" Johnny inquired placing a friendly expression on his face. "Yeah, John, come in and have a seat, please," Hank said motioning to the chair next to his desk. "I trust that Roy spoke to you." Johnny only nodded trying hard to maintain his composure. "Good. Johnny I know this is not going to be easy for you at first with having Roy gone from here. After all you both have been a team for a long time and a good team at that. You both have always worked well together. And both of you have gone through a lot together here on shift as well as off shift. You and Roy both knew this day would arrive sooner or later. John, I'm counting on you as the new senior paramedic at this station to help ease your new partner into the swing of things. Can I count on you to do this?" "Of course, Cap. Do you know yet who will be replacing Roy?" Johnny asked trying hard to sound enthusiastic. "Yes I do in fact. He's new to the program - fresh out of field training." Hank was sure he heard a slight groan coming from John as he continued to speak. "His name is Jack Tracer. He placed first during the paramedic's course and performed an excellent job while doing his field training. Also from what I've read in his file he is also considered an excellent firefighter, that coming from his previous Captain." "So he's not a complete stranger to firefighting duties then?" Johnny asked inquisitively. "No he isn't, and while he served over at 89's, he was top notch with his EMT skills when his services were required." Hank answered. "Then I guess he will be top notch as a paramedic too?" Johnny replied hopefully. "If he's not before he gets to this station, I'm sure he will by the time you show him the ropes," Hank concluded with a smile. Johnny nodded, "Is that all Cap?" he asked as he began to fidget in his seat. Johnny really wanted this conversation to be over. He needed to get out of the office so he could spend some time alone to think. "For now John." Before Johnny was able to leave the office, Hank added one more thing. "Oh and John! If you ever feel the need to talk, no matter what it's about, I'm here, okay." "Sure, Cap! Thanks." Johnny said before walking out of the room. Johnny's mood was now at an all time low. He hated losing Roy as his partner, but he also knew how important this career move was for Roy. With the increased salary, Roy could easily do more for his family. That's why Johnny never said anything to prevent Roy from taking the promotion. If anything he encouraged it, even though inside he was hurting over the whole situation. Johnny found he had lost his appetite for lunch. He decided to take refuge in the locker room. He needed to go through his locker anyway and sift out the garbage that had been collecting on the bottom over the past few weeks. Before Mike had an opportunity to put a call out to everyone, that lunch was ready to be served, the Klaxon's sounded. Station 51, Engine 45, Engine 10, structure fire, 1262 Grace Ave, cross street E 220th. Time out 12:05. Station 51 was the first to arrive at the scene, with Engines 45 and 10 close behind. The house was a small two-story cape cod style home. The ground floor was already well involved by the time they had arrived. Captain Stanley jumped down from the Engine. He began issuing orders to his men and the arriving companies as to where he wanted them. Chet and Marco each pulled an inch and a half. Backed up by Johnny and Roy, they began to assault the fire from the front of the house. Suddenly glass shattered from an upstairs window. A young child appeared and began screaming for help. Johnny and Roy pulled away from the hoses they were on. They set themselves into full paramedic and rescue mode to save the child. Grabbing the ladder from the Engine, Johnny and Roy placed it just under where the broken window was. Johnny quickly climbed up the ladder. He lifted the young child out through the window and placed her over his shoulder. Once he was down the ladder safely to the ground, he and Roy began to check her over. When Johnny tried to place the oxygen mask over her face, she screamed. She told them that her mother was still inside the house and that she couldn't wake her mother up. Roy remained with the child. With Captain Stanley's help, Johnny climbed back up the ladder to the broken window to rescue the woman who remained inside the burning structure. Climbing through the window, Johnny found his victim lying on the floor beside the bed. She was comatose. He quickly gathered her up, handed her lifeless form out the window to his Captain who was waiting at the top of the ladder. Once Hank had her securely in place on his shoulder, he climbed back down the ladder. Johnny quickly made his exit from the house descending the ladder right behind his Captain. Seconds after Hank, Johnny, and the victim were safely on the ground an explosion rocked the house. The entire upstairs had become engulfed in flames. Johnny and his Captain each gave the other a knowing look, thankful that they were safely on the outside. Roy glanced up when he heard the explosion. He quickly caught sight of his partner and Captain on the ground with the victim. Inwardly he said a thank you that everyone had been spared. It was that moment, looking in the direction of his partner and seeing the house in the background, that Roy wondered if he could handle not knowing Johnny's every move while working a rescue. Once this shift ended, Roy wouldn't be around any longer to be sure that his partner would in fact be safe. This thought concerned him greatly. Roy knew that the following shift he would take up one of the safest position's within the department next to the dispatcher job. Johnny on the other hand would continue to put his life at risk each time he went out on a rescue. Inwardly, Roy felt he would have to trust Johnny to take care of himself and not risk his life needlessly. Roy only hoped that Johnny's new partner would be half the person Johnny was and watch his friends back carefully. With the house fully involved, Hank gave the order to all the Engine Companies, to surround and drown. Johnny and Roy finished treating their victims as requested by Rampart. Then the woman and child were loaded into the ambulance for transport. Johnny road in the ambulance with the victims while Roy remained behind to clean up the remaining equipment. With the ambulance gone, the equipment and garbage packed away, Roy finally noticed for the first time that Engine 45 was at the scene of the fire. Momentarily forgetting the squad, Roy wondered over to the shiny almost new Ward La France parked directly behind Engine 51. The rig was impressive. Closing his eyes he envisioned himself handling the gauges, adjusting water pressure for the men. Mike was the first to notice the paramedic. He noticed a slight smile creep onto the corners of Roy's lips. Mike grabbed Ryder's attention, 45's engineer, without alerting Roy. This was Ryder's last shift. After today he was retiring and happy for it. Catching a glimpse of Roy behind him, he grabbed the paramedic's attention. "Hey! Roy! Come! Check the lady out!" Ryder urged. Snapping his eyes open. Roy discovered that not only was Ryder looking at him so was Stoker. Mike never said a word. He only gestured for Roy to check out the Engine that the paramedic would be taking care of beginning the next shift. Cautiously, as if the rig was going to bit him, Roy approached. "She's a beauty?" He remarked to Ryder. "You bet she is Roy. I'm goin' to miss her, but it's time…time for me to say goodbye. The wife and I have some long over due vacation plans, now that the kids are grown and out of the house." Ryder replied as he continued to check on the water pressure going to the hoses. Roy nodded his understanding. Hesitantly he reached out and touched the apparatus. "Are you busy right now Roy?" Ryder asked. Roy shook his head. "No! Not really!" "Would you like to take charge for a few?" "I don't know if I should. I really should be getting over to Rampart. My partner is probably waiting on me." "I think your partner be okay for a few more minutes, Roy. Here! Take control of the gauges. I have faith. I know Stoker has been showing you the ropes." Ryder replied with a grin. Roy grinned too. He then stepped up closer to the big red rig and took over control. Ryder looked over in Stoker's direction and flashed him a thumbs up. Stoker returned the gesture. Ever since Roy decided to accept the promotion, Mike had guided him on the dos and don'ts of how to operate the rig. Over those few weeks, Mike had learned through Roy's actions that the paramedic was a bit apprehensive about making the career change even though Roy never said anything to the contrary. Fifteen minutes later the fire was brought under control and extinguished. It was at this time that Stanley discovered Roy was still at the scene and his paramedic was relishing his brief introduction to the rig that was to be his on the following shift. Stanley smiled then approached his paramedic. "She's quite the rig, isn't she, Roy?" Roy looked up at his Captain. "She sure is!" he replied. Suddenly Roy realized just how long he had been there. He had completely forgotten about the squad and taking it over to Rampart to pick up his partner. "Sorry Cap! I guess I kind of lost track of the time. I should go pick up Johnny before he sends out the boy's in blue to find me." Stanley chuckled. "Not a problem Roy. Actually, I'm glad you had a chance to see the old gal. After all she'll be yours come next shift." "Yeah. She will be at that." After thanking Ryder for the opportunity to 'play' with the rig, Roy jogged over to the squad, jumped in then drove to Rampart. At Rampart, Roy found Johnny leaning against the desk at the nurse's station. He snuck up behind his partner and said 'boo' into Johnny's ear. Johnny nearly jumped out of his skin. "Just what are you tryin' to do to me Roy. Give me a heart attack?" Roy laughed, "Well your in the right place for one." "That's not the least bit funny. By the way where have you been? I've been waiting for almost 45 minutes," Johnny said checking his watch. "I had a brief engagement with a lady," came Roy's reply. "A what?" Johnny asked thinking that his partner was starting to loose his mind. "I wasn't needed here, so I took a few minutes and had a look at engine 45. She was parked right behind 51's rig." "Oh," was all Johnny said. The mention of 45's rig only cast a sense of loss over the paramedic. "So! How's the woman and child?" "Huh." "The woman and child you brought in. Are they going to be okay?" "Yeah. Brackett said they would only need a couple days of mostly observation in the hospital and they would be fine." "That's good. Ready to go?" Roy asked. "Yeah. Let's get out of here." Their return trip to the station was quiet. Neither Johnny nor Roy said much to each other. They spent most of their time deep in thought. Their thoughts were about all the new changes coming into both of their lives by the next shift. Once Roy had finished backing the squad into the bay, without saying a word, Johnny jumped out and disappeared back inside the locker room. Roy followed his friend lagging behind some, so he could give Johnny a few minutes before he intruded on his friend's privacy. Cracking the door open, Roy watched as Johnny picked up, first one thing then another, before he tossed it back inside his locker. Finally, taking a deep breath Roy stepped inside the room. Roy noticed Johnny was staring at something that he held in his hand. "What do you have there?" Roy inquired. Without turning around, Johnny held the item up over his shoulder for Roy to view. It was photograph; one that had been taken of both of them shortly after Johnny graduation from the paramedic program, when they had first joined 51's as a team. "I didn't know you kept that here in your locker," Roy stated walking over to take the photo out of Johnny's hand. Roy studied it for a few minutes. "I guess I made a great decision when I asked you to be my partner." Johnny only nodded. He didn't trust his voice to speak at least for the moment. Roy looked at the picture and smiled remembering the day Johnny had walked into the small office at fire department headquarters like it was yesterday. Johnny looked young, like he was barely old enough to even be in the department. As Roy conversed with the young man, he realized just how knowledgeable Johnny really was. Johnny's application hadn't been signed prior to arrival. Before signing, Johnny asked Roy several questions about the program, including the Bill that was before the state legislature. Bill PM11307 that would permit qualified fire department personal to administer medical treatment in the field. Roy explained to Johnny that paramedic's were going to be the most important advancement in Emergency Medicine in the last 50 years. That they were going to be an important part to saving people lives out in the field because somebody at the scene knew what to do and how to do it. Johnny became even more intrigued about the program, but he also needed further convincing. Roy then went on to explain about how there were only six guys that had already taken the special training to cover 6.5 million people. That they couldn't wait for the Bill to be passed before more people were trained. They had to be ready once the bill was passed. That was the final incentive for Johnny to sign up for the program. Despite some of the obstacles, such as Doctor Bracket who at the time didn't support the program, a second class of paramedic's begun their training. Johnny was included in that class. Twelve weeks later, Johnny graduated and was assigned to 51's with Roy as his partner. During those first few weeks, like predicted, the paramedics were not allowed to use their specialized training. Only after a car accident, which Johnny and Roy responded to with Dixie, did Bracket begin to change his tune about the program. He finally begun to realize the importance of those few selected men with the specialized training. Some of whom he personally helped educate. They were in fact the doctor's eyes and ears out in the field and they were saving lives. At the accident scene, Johnny and Roy went against Brackett's orders and administered treatment on the victims. Even though he tore a strip off of both Johnny and Roy for putting their precious program in jeopardy, taking matters into their own hands, he begrudgingly told them that they did do a good job and they made the right decision with treating the victims. Bracket then personally made the trip to speak before the state legislature in hopes of getting Bill PM11307 passed. Soon after Brackett's speech, where he laid the worse scenarios on the table, the bill indeed passed. The program was then fully operational, much to the delight of the several men who already had the specialized training and for several others that were thinking about taking that training. Now, as the times were beginning to change, so too were these two men, best friends, and partners. "You know Johnny, I never did tell you how grateful I was that you decided to join the program. I'm also glad we became partners and best friends," Roy smiled handing the picture back to his friend. Johnny turned to face Roy. "That makes two of us Pally." At that moment Johnny and Roy gripped each other in a manly macho bear hug. Seconds later they both heard the Engine backing into the bay, so they pulled apart. Neither man wanted to be the obstacle of any taunting, something Chet notoriously enjoyed when he found something good to rib one of them about. Pulling back from his friend, Roy looked at Johnny, "How about we go get some lunch?" Johnny smiled at Roy. "Sounds like a plan to me." He tucked the photo back safely inside his locker behind his smoky the bear poster. The two friends then walked out of the locker room toward the kitchen for some much needed lunch. ~*~*~*~*~ The rest of the shift passed by with the normal amount of responses for both the squad and the Engine. Mike, Marco, and Chet each congratulated Roy on his new position as Engineer. Chet even took pity on his favorite pigeon and retired the phantom for the remainder of the shift because he knew Johnny was only wearing a cheerful face for Roy's sake. The morning shift change at 51's was handed over to B-shift. Each of them extended their congratulations to Roy too, before they responded to a call. Mike, Marco, Chet, and Hank said their goodbyes to one another and then to Roy along, with an additional round of congratulations before they all walked out the door. Johnny and Roy were left behind, alone in the station. Everyone wanted to give the two friends some time alone to talk while they emptied out Roy's locker. "So, what do you have planned for your day's off?" Johnny inquired trying hard not to look directly at Roy. "Joanne and I are going to take the kids to the beach later today and then the tomorrow I have a few things I need to get finished up around the house that I've been neglecting lately." Roy replied while placing the last of his uniform shirts into the paper sack that sat on the bench. "What about you? What do you have planned?" Nodding Johnny supplied. "I have a date tonight with Lacy Ryder, the nurse from pediatrics. I've been out with her a few times. She's got a great scene of humor," Johnny chuckled recalling their last date. Roy chuckled, "So does this mean she might be 'the one'?" Johnny eyes went wide and shook his head, "I don't think so, Roy. She's just great company that all. You know me, I like my single life and the freedom that goes along with it." 'Sure Johnny, that's why you're constantly on the prowl for the one that will make you happy.' Roy thought as he and Johnny conversed. "How would you like to come over for supper tomorrow night? It's been a while since you've been over to the house. Joanne and the kids have been asking about you," Roy said with a slightly hopeful look on his face. "I'd like to Roy, but I've got too many things too do tomorrow. Between grocery shopping, getting my hair cut, cleaning up my apartment and getting my laundry done, I don't think I will have time to drop by." Johnny could see the disappointed look come over Roy's face. He really did want to spend time with Roy and his family, but at the same time he didn't want to do it right before the two of them were severing their partnership. " How about a rain check, Roy?" A smile returned to Roy's troubled face, "That sounds like a plan. How about next week sometime?" "Good deal. Next week it is," Johnny said forcing the smile back on his face. Roy wasn't lost with Johnny's attempt to remain cheerful. Johnny's eyes were a dead give away. Roy could see the hurt that had been pouring from them since he had told Johnny about leaving 51's the day before. Roy wasn't about to broach the subject again, not when they were so close to leaving the station. Instead, Roy himself forced a smile on his face and replied, "How about I call you next week and we can get together for a barbeque at my house?" Johnny nodded. He couldn't bring himself to speak fearing he would have more that words pour from his face. Johnny and Roy then gathered up all of Roy's belongings. They walked out to the parking lot together. After placing his things into his truck, Roy faced Johnny. Awkwardly they said their goodbyes, got into their perspective vehicles and drove toward their perspective homes. As each man drove along the street in different directions toward home, the emotions both Johnny and Roy had bottled up inside them during their entire shift finally came pouring out, as their eyes filled with tears and began to drip down their faces. Although they were still friends, the changes resulting from Roy's promotion was still painful for both of them. ~*~*~*~*~ With Roy absence from 51's, Hank Stanley wasn't able to personally look out for his friend. Hank was concerned about his former paramedic. He had sensed Roy's uncertainty over the decision with his career move, so he decided to ask Captain Bill Marks to keep a watchful eye over Roy for him. Out of courtesy to an old friend, Marks obliged Stanley's request. Several shifts later both Johnny and Roy had finally settled into their new positions as comfortably as they could be expected to. When Roy wasn't occupied with his job, he was distracted and kept to himself. Johnny, on the other hand, had more that his usual amount of energy. He continually kept himself busy throughout his shift, so he wouldn't have time to think. During Roy's first few shifts at 45's, he stopped himself several times from running out to the squad when they were called out on a run. When the engine and squad responded to a call together, Roy found it difficult to remain an onlooker while the paramedics performed their duties - duties he could perform in his sleep. He was grateful for the few times his expertise was needed when 45's paramedic's needed an extra pair of hands. Captain Marks was not blind to Roy's anxiety. He was pleased with Roy's performance as his engineer, but he, like Hank Stanley was certain Roy's heart truly wasn't with the engineering position. One afternoon, three weeks after Roy had arrived at 45's, Marks called him into the office. At first, Roy was alarmed that he had done something wrong. He approached Marks's office with caution and hesitantly knocked. Marks smiled, "Come on in Roy! How about you have a seat?" Roy nodded. He nervously walked over to the chair beside his Captain's desk. He felt like a kid in school walking into the principal's office waiting for his discipline. Sitting down Roy quietly asked, "Did I do something wrong, Sir?" Marks smiled, "No, Roy. You're not in any trouble. I just wanted to speak with you for a few minutes about your decision with changing careers." Roy sighed. He was relieved he wasn't in any kind of trouble. Placing a slight smile on his face, Roy spoke. "What is it you would like to know, Sir?" "Well, Roy, I've been keeping my eye on you ever since you joined my team. You've been doing a splendid job working the engine, but you have seemed…well a bit unhappy. I have known several men that have moved on with their careers during my career in the department. Some had made the right choice. Some did not. I have a gut feeling that maybe you didn't make the right choice. I also have the feeling that you have been regretting your decision." Roy's smile vanished. He stared at the floor while he listened to his Captain. He hated to admit it, but Marks wasn't far from the truth. Roy had begun to second-guess his decision the moment the squad and engine responded to their first call together his first day at 45's. He stood on the sidelines and watched 45's paramedic's treat a victim from a MVA. When Marks finished speaking, Roy glanced up into his face. He could see the concern etched on his Captain's face. He really didn't want to tell Marks that he was right. He figured it would be a weakness of character to admit to defeat. To admit he had made the wrong choice. Silence remained between the two men for several minutes. Marks wanted to give Roy some time to consider his words. When Roy didn't offer a response, Marks tried another approach. "Look Roy, there is no shame in admitting you made the wrong decision. You were a paramedic for a long time. I know you were at the forefront of getting the program off the ground. I can understand how hard it must have been to leave your 'baby', so to speak behind. I also know there are no incentives at this time for paramedic's to remain in the program. There is no increase in pay to go along with the job and the knowledge of medical procedures you have to maintain. I also know that not all people are cut out to be paramedics. It's a demanding job." Marks paused briefly as he studied his engineer. "Roy! Am I to assume that your silence means that I've hit the nail on the head?" "Sort of, Sir. I have had a few reservations since I've moved over here to 45's. Don't get me wrong, Sir, I knew I wouldn't be able to work as both a paramedic and an engineer at the same time. It has been a bit difficult standing by watching Dooley and Stash perform a job, I still know how to do and do well. It's just going to take some time to get used to, that's all." Roy looked at his Captain hoping he bought his half-truths. Captain Marks wasn't a stupid man. He knew Roy had issues that had to be dealt with concerning the changes with his career. He figured he would give his engineer some additional time to sort those issues out, so long as Roy's problem didn't interfere with his performing his job. "Okay Roy! I think I understand where you're coming from. Listen, if you need to talk, I'm here. I know you don't know me as well as you know Stanley, but I'm an easy person to talk to. Especially if you need to vent." "Thanks, Cap! I'll remember that. Is there any thing more you wanted to see me about?" Roy asked before standing to leave. "No Roy. There's nothing more. You're dismissed." Marks answered. Once Roy was out of the office, Marks placed a call to Hank Stanley . Everyone at 51's was sitting around the table enjoying a well-deserved cup of coffee when the phone rang. Johnny was sitting closest to the phone so he jumped up to answer it. "Station 51. Firefighter John Gage speaking." "John, this is Captain Marks. I'd like to speak to Captain Stanley " When Johnny heard Marks ask for Stanley, he immediately became concerned about Roy. Holding his hand over the mouthpiece, he looked at his Captain. "It's for you Cap. It's Captain Marks. " Hank got up from his spot at the table. "I'll take it in the office, John." Hank said. Johnny couldn't help but notice the concern that was etched over Hank's face when he walked past him out of the kitchen. When Johnny knew Hank had picked up the phone in the office, he hung up the phone in the kitchen. Johnny turned to face his crewmates. Concern was also etched on his face. Chet was the first to inquire, "What is that all about?" Johnny shook his head, "I don't know." "Is Roy doing okay over at 45's?" Marco asked. Johnny nodded, "As far as I know he is doing a great job. He's handling the engine like he's been doing it for years." "I hope he's okay." Mike added. Johnny didn't say a word. He looked at Mike. A shiver ran down his spine as worry crept into his mind for his friend. Johnny decided not to hang around Mike, Chet, Marco, and Jack any longer. He really didn't feel much like answering any more of their questions, so he left the kitchen. He waited outside Hank's office until his Captain was finished on the phone. When Hank hung up the phone, Johnny knocked on the office door. Hank looked up. He wasn't surprised as to who it was knocking on his office door. Even though they were no longer partners, Johnny and Roy continued to worry about each other in a big way. "Come in John." Hank said sighing. "Cap, is there something wrong with Roy? He didn't get hurt did he?" Johnny asked worriedly, trying hard to control his nervousness. Hank smiled, " No John. He's fine. I guess I should let you know though. Bill Marks is an old friend of mine. I asked him to keep a watchful eye over Roy for me. Even though Roy's not under my command any more doesn't mean I don't worry about him. Bill was just giving me a report that's all." Johnny let out the breath he held waiting for Hank to answer his question. "That's a relief. I was worried that something may have happened to him." Johnny then looked at Hank and chuckled, "It's nice to know that you are still looking out for your man, even through he isn't working for you any more." Hank smiled, "Well John, I've always considered our crew part of a family. Even though Roy has flown the coup. I still consider him part of that family." Johnny grinned. He was grateful he had such a caring Captain. Not all the Captain's in the department were this considerate. Sure, most would wish any of their men well on new endeavors, but few would bother to go to the trouble to see if all was well on the new job. Before Johnny could probe further about the phone call, Hank asked him to close the door and take a seat. "What's wrong?" Johnny asked alarmed. "Relax John. Like I already told you, Roy's fine. I need to ask you a few questions that's all." Hank replied. Johnny nodded. He closed the door and took a seat next to Hank's desk. "Okay John, I've been meaning to speak to you before now, but as you have noticed we have been particularly busy over the last few shifts. I know I've asked you this once already, but now that you and Jack have worked several more shifts together. I would like to know how things are working out between you both?" Johnny wasn't the type of person to say anything out of context about anyone he worked with, unless they were not performing their job proficiently. "Jack's doing great. He's a skilled paramedic. The attachments in his file did him justice. I couldn't have asked for a better replacement for Roy." Hank slowly nodded his head. "I get the point, John. I did notice that you left out one little detail though. You have never once called Jack, your partner." Johnny stared at Hank. He was speechless. He hadn't even realized that small detail. Inwardly, Johnny wasn't sure he could ever call anyone else other than Roy, partner, at least permanently. He knew in a way he being selfish, but the fact was Johnny relished being Roy partner. In the back of Johnny's mind a thought lingered. He hoped that one day Roy would give up being an engineer and would return to the paramedic program. That way they could be partners once again. Realistically though, Johnny knew that would never happen. Johnny knew that Roy's place was with his new career. Johnny sighed, "I know Cap. I'm sorry. I guess I should be more accepting of Jack. I never realized until now that I've distanced myself from him. We seem to work well together when we are out on a call. Like I've said, he's a skilled paramedic. I have no complaints as far as his work is concerned. I guess part of me is still trying to accept the changes. That's all!" Hank nodded understandingly, "I know John. It has to be hard. You and Roy were not only a great team, but are both the best of friends. I would like to give you a small piece of advice though. Give Jack a bit of consideration. Let him know he is welcome here at 51's. Let him know you accept him as your partner." "I will Cap," Johnny, replied wholeheartedly. "Look, I know I've told you this already, but if you want or need to talk about anything. My door is always open," Hank proffered hoping Johnny would confide in him. "Thanks Cap. I haven't forgotten. Is that all?" Johnny asked eagerly. "For now John. You're dismissed." Hank replied. Once Johnny had left his office, Hank thought back over his conversation with Bill Marks. He too was concerned about Roy. He had known right from the start that Roy had some misgiving. He was going to make it a point to talk to his former paramedic once the shift was complete. He figured that Roy would have an easier time confiding in him than he would in Bill. Not that Bill wasn't an easy man to talk to about things, but because Roy didn't know Bill all that well. Hank also took a moment to think about the conversation he had just had with Johnny. Hank was certain that Johnny too was still a bit worked up over Roy's promotion. He decided that since Johnny was under his watchful eye at the moment that he could wait for another day or two before striking up another conversation with his paramedic. For now, Hank wanted to concentrate on Roy. Hank was certain Roy needed some help about getting a perspective on the whole situation. Hank wasn't going to let anything slide this time. He was going to be assured, that when the conversation was finished between him and Roy, Roy wouldn't have any lingering doubts left in his mind. The sound of the klaxon caused Hank to set his thoughts aside for the time being. Station 51, Station 45, Engine 10, Engine 23, Engine 36, Truck 127. Structure fire 2200 Sepulveda Blvd, cross street Main. Time out 15:52. Johnny and his partner Jack Tracer could see the smoke billowing well above the adjacent building as they approached the fire scene in the squad. "Man this looks like it's going to be a bad one," Jack said nervously. Having worked on the engine over at 89's for several years he was all too familiar with structure fires and the degree of severity. Johnny briefly studied the old two-story warehouse that had been recently converted into luxury apartment flats as he pulled the squad to a halt just past the complex. Flames were pouring out of several windows on one side of the building and smoke was pouring out of the others. Looking over at Jack, Johnny replied, "I think you're right pal." The two men jumped out of the squad. Grabbing their turnout coats and tanks, they approached Captain Stanley and awaited instructions. Stanley jumped down from engine 51 almost before Mike Stoker brought her to a full stop. He began issuing orders into his HT to the approaching engine companies. When Hank finished assigning positions to the other firefighters, he turned to his paramedics, Johnny and Jack and the paramedic's from 45's Stash and Dooley, who arrived only a moment before. He ordered the four men to grab a couple of lines from the engine then begin a sweep of the building to check for victims. With precision and agility, Johnny, Jack, Dooley, and Stash grabbed the hoses, some flashlights, and ropes and entered the building. Dooley and Stash took the first floor. Johnny and Jack ascended the stairs on the end of the building furthest away from the flames to do a sweep of the second floor. The hallways were filled with thick black smoke. None of the paramedics were able to see more than a couple of feet in front of themselves as they made their way down the dark hallways. Once on the second floor, Jack held the hose as Johnny carefully checked each apartment for victims. On the first floor Stash held the hose for his partner while Dooley checked the apartments thoroughly. Roy remained on the outside with his engine, engine 45, which was parked around the corner of the building out of view from engine and squad 51. He busied himself adjusting the gauges as necessary for men so they would have the proper water pressure at all times as they battled the blaze. The water tank on the engine received a study supply of water from a near by hydrant. With his duties and keeping his ear tuned to the radio, Roy didn't have much time to even think or worry about his best friend. Occasionally he would hear over the radio that one of the paramedics was in need of additional help with removing a victim. Finally at one point, Roy heard Johnny's voice telling Captain Stanley that a complete sweep had been done on the warehouse/ apartments. Everyone missing was accounted for. Roy breathed a sigh of relief knowing that his friend was safe and on the outside. Over the next hour the blaze was brought under control and finally extinguished. Available personal began the task of overhaul while others stood by with hoses in case of additional flare-ups. By this time Jack, Dooley, and Stash had already accompanied the victims to Rampart. Johnny remained behind on the scene in case his services were required during the overhaul. Deep in the bowels of the building, on the first floor, the ceiling became unstable. Before it was noticed, a section collapsed, raining debris, glass, wood, mortar, drywall, even metal down over several firefighters, one of whom became trapped. Stanley quickly called in a Code I over his HT. He requested additional manpower to rescue the fallen firefighter. He also requested an additional squad. Knowing full well the squad would take at least 15 to 20 minutes to arrive, Stanley summoned Captain Marks on the HT. "HT 51 to HT 45, I need your engineer inside the building now." Marks glanced over toward Roy. He could see fear etched on the man's face from the recent transmission on the radio. Marks decided early on when Roy had joined his team that if his services as a paramedic were ever required while his engineer was still certified, he would waste no time sending the trained man to help. Marks could tell from the urgency in Stanley's voice that the problem concerning the Code I was serious. "10-4 HT 51, he's on his way. HT 45, out." In seconds Roy had the pumps shut down. He and Captain Marks quickly scrambled inside the building. A gut feeling told him that the fallen firefighter was his former partner . Roy gasped when he approached the scene. Chet, Marco, and Stanley were working diligently clearing away debris. Hank heard the gasp escaping from his former paramedic's throat. He turned around to face Roy. "It's Johnny, Roy. It's bad," Hank said with anguish pouring out from his eyes. Without a word, Roy went into full paramedic mode. He and his Captain jumped in, assisting with uncovering Johnny. As the last piece of heavy sheetrock was removed, Roy knelt beside his friend to do a cursive check of his extremities. He bellowed to no one in particular to fetch a backboard, cervical collar, and the spare drug box off of one of the squads. Roy spotted blood pooling on the floor near Johnny's head. He discovered the source of the blood was from a 2" laceration over Johnny left eyebrow. Roy then ran his hands down over Johnny's arms and legs, checking for broken bones. Roy inwardly was thankful he found no broken limbs. He did however discover several small lacerations over Johnny's lower legs When he pulled his hands away he discovered more blood. Glass littered the area surrounding Johnny. Roy was certain that there was glass under his friend too. He worried that shards of glass may have penetrated Johnny's torso. Roy quickly and carefully palpitated Johnny's ribs. Running his fingers just under the edge of Johnny's torso, Roy nicked his index finger, on some glass. He instantly became alarmed when he withdrew his hands and found a massive amount of blood covering his fingers. Shining a flashlight over Johnny, everyone could see blood slowly flowing away from Johnny's body. A loud gasp was audible from everyone and echoed off the hollows of what was left of the building. Roy knew that Johnny was in need of immediately medical attention. They had to extricate him fast and stop the bleeding or he would die. Roy felt he would be better able to assess and treat Johnny's injuries outside. Quickly and expertly, Roy placed the cervical collar around Johnny's neck. With the help of Marco, Chet, Stanley, Marks, and with Roy guiding them, they log rolled Johnny onto the backboard. Glass crunched under each of their feet as they maneuvered Johnny toward the exit. Roy held a flashlight, scanning Johnny's abdomen and chest area as they walked out of the building. Johnny's turncoat was smeared with blood. In several places the coat was completely sliced open. Johnny remained unconscious the entire time. It had been only 15 minutes from the time Stanley announced the Code I until they had Johnny outside. The requested squad had still not arrived. Roy began with the removal of Johnny's turncoat and his uniform shirt. Carefully, Roy cut the garments away from Johnny's body so not to further injure his friend. At Roy's instruction, Chet placed a 4x4 over Johnny's head wound and wrapped it with gauze. Marco set up the oxygen, while Stanley got on the radio to set up a link with Rampart. Mike grabbed the BP cuff and Stethoscope from the drug box and had them ready for Roy once he finished stripping Johnny. Another gasp was heard among the group at the sight of Johnny's chest and abdomen. Johnny was sliced in several places from the base of his neck down to nearly his navel. His ribs were exposed through a couple of the lacerations. Johnny was bleeding profusely from his wounds. With Roy's instruction, Captain Marks quickly grabbed several packages of 4x4's to use as compresses. Once the bandages were in place slight pressure was applied. The bleeding slowed considerable. Roy then snatched the BP cuff from Mike. As he placed the it on Johnny's arm, Roy asked Mike to grab a bag of ringers and the set up. The siren from the arriving squad was heard in the background as it approached. Stanley finally had the link established with Rampart. He relayed Johnny's condition and the vitals that Roy had given to him. Rampart in turn ordered IV of ringers wide open, oxygen, another set of vitals, and to transport immediately. By the time squad 36 pulled up and stopped, Roy already had the ordered IV in place. Dwyer and Bellingham from squad 36 quickly rushed over to the prone paramedic with additional equipment. "What have you got, Roy?" Dwyer asked. "Johnny was pinned under a collapsed ceiling. He's got several lacerations on his chest and stomach from broken glass that littered the floor under him. He also has a laceration on his forehead. He's lost a lot of blood. Rampart has already given the go ahead to set up an IV of ringers, wide open. They want him transported immediately and they need another set of vitals." Dwyer nodded his understanding. A new set of vitals could be taken and reported on route to Rampart. The priority for now was to get Johnny in the ambulance and transported. Quickly several men helped load Johnny onto the stretcher. He was then quickly loaded into the ambulance with Dwyer jumping in behind him. Before the doors to the ambulance were closed Dwyer looked at Roy. "I'll take good care of him Roy," Dwyer said anxiously. Roy nodded. He couldn't trust his voice to speak. He was terrified for his friend's life. Inwardly, Roy was certain that it was only because he knew what to do and that he had the equipment to work with. This was the only reason Johnny was still alive at this point. The hardest thing Roy had ever done thus far as an engineer was to hand his best friends life over to another paramedic. The second hardest thing for him to do was to remain behind with his engine. Roy knew he would have to rely on reports from Dixie and Hank on Johnny's condition until he finished out his shift at 45's. Roy remained in his spot until after the ambulance pulled away and disappeared down the street. The others, Mike, Chet, and Marco all sympathetically patted their friend on the back before they began to clean up and put the equipment away. "Roy, I'll meet you back at the engine." Marks said as he gave Roy a squeeze on the arm. Marks also gave a nod to Hank before he walked away. Roy only nodded his answer. Hank approached his friend and former paramedic. He was certain Roy was in need of a few kind words as well as understanding ear. "Come on pal, I'll walk you back over to your engine." Shifting his eyes away from the direction the ambulance had gone, Roy turned and walked away with his former Captain. They had walked almost halfway toward the engine before either man spoke. "Roy! You did an outstanding job, Pal." "Thanks Cap." Roy replied, tears stinging the corner of his eyes. "Would you like me to ask Marks to get you a replacement?" Hank inquired out of concern. "I should, but at the same time I know I shouldn't. I'm an engineer now and I have my engine to take care of. I know Johnny is in good hands. I also know he got the best of preliminary care because I was there and I knew what to do. I know there is nothing more that I can do for him now. He'll be in Brackett's hands soon. I know that you and Dixie will let me know how's he's doing until I get off shift." "That we will Pal," Hank said with compassion. Hank was certain from witnessing Roy's performance inside as well as outside the building, that his friend had major reservations about his decision. Hank was going to make himself available to have a heart to heart with Roy following their shift. "I'll keep in touch with you through the rest of the shift. I'll also be seeing you in the morning, Roy." Roy looked at his friend and smiled. If anything, Roy was certain that some of the best firefighters in the department, worked at 51's. "Thanks, Cap," Roy said shaking Hanks hand before walking the rest of the way to his engine. Hank smiled in returned. This was one day that he was grateful that Roy was an engineer and not a paramedic. This was only because of the fact that Roy was present to treat not only a close friend, but also a fellow firefighter. ~*~*~*~*~ The rest of the shift was somewhat difficult for Roy as he waited to visit his best friend. Roy was concerned about how Johnny was going to react toward him because he hadn't accompanied him to the hospital or was around when Johnny woke. Roy was relieved when he had received word from Dixie almost immediately after he returned to station 45. Dixie informed Roy that Johnny regained consciousness shortly after his arrival to Rampart and there were no signs of any skull fracture, only a moderate concussion. She confessed to Roy that Brackett was impressed with the initial treatment given to Johnny, which had most certainly saved his life. Johnny could have easily bled to death within a manner of minutes without immediate treatment. Luckily the lacerations were not very deep and only required minor surgery to repair the damage. Although this news pleased Roy, he was anxious to see his former partner for himself. The shift seemed to Roy like it was twice as long as normal. Thankfully, because of Captain Marks, B-Shift's engineer arrived an hour earlier for his shift. This allowed Roy the opportunity to see his friend sooner than he had expected too. The thing that surprised Roy was when he had arrived to Rampart, he found Hank waiting for him. Roy began to suspect that Captain Marks and Captain Stanley planned this little get together to give the two men some time alone to talk. Inwardly Roy was grateful. He wanted to discuss a few things with his former Captain ever since their little stroll back to his engine the day before. "How are you doing, Roy?" Hank asked full of concern. Roy sighed, "About as well as could be expected in light of everything that's happened, I guess." "You know Roy, Johnny is alive because of what you did for him." Roy nodded, "I know." "Roy, I spoke to Bill Marks yesterday before the fire. He's concerned about you." Hank said keeping his eyes directed at Roy. Roy smiled, "Looks to me like he's not the only one who's concerned." "You're right, Pal! I am concerned about you too. I have been ever since that day in my office when I delivered the news to you about your promotion." Hank paused briefly to study the man the stood with him. "Roy, I suspect that you aren't exactly thrilled with your decision. Am I right?" Again Roy nodded, "Yeah! You're right. I think maybe I acted a bit too hastily. I don't think I was quite ready to give up being a paramedic." "There's no harm in admitting you've made the wrong decision, Roy. I do know one thing. From what Bill told me, you make a good engineer, but with what I know, you make one hell of a paramedic." Roy looked into Hank's eyes. He could see honesty and truth staring back at him. Roy nodded, "Yeah, several people have told me that. You know Cap, I'm not saying that I totally dislike being an engineer." "No you're not, but I think you love being a paramedic more." Roy smiled at the words his former Captain spoke. He finally realized what he had known all along. "So, Cap, what should I do?" "Personally Roy. I think you should go home and talk to Joanne. Tell her how you feel about everything. Then if you decide that you would like to return to the paramedic program, call me! I'll make whatever necessary calls that have to be made so you can be reinstated as a paramedic." "Thanks Cap, for the talk. I will definitely have a talk with Joanne, but I think I've already made up my mind as to what I'm going to do." Hank nodded. He was sure he knew exactly what decision Roy had come too as well. Once he checked on Johnny, Hank decided he was going to place a very important call to the chief. He needed to secure Roy's paramedic's position at 51's. In addition he had to secure a good spot for Jack Tracer. Hank knew that 110's had an opening for a permanent paramedic. Like 51's, 110's, was a good station to work at. Silence settled between the two friends while they waited for the permission to visit Johnny. ~*~*~*~*~ Four weeks later, Johnny bounded into the kitchen of station 51. As he walked over toward the stove to grab a cup of coffee, he gave Mike and Marco a little slap on the back, "Morning! Morning! Morning. It sure is great to be back." Mike and Marco both smiled and cheerfully welcomed Johnny back. With his back to the cupboard, holding a cup of coffee in mid air, Johnny froze as he watched Roy walk into the kitchen. Chet and Hank followed close behind. The thing that caught Johnny's eyes was the paramedic patch on Roy's shirt. Grinning, Johnny asked, "What's going on?" Roy smiled. "I heard you needed a new partner." "You're kidding right." Johnny looked at Hank and the others, "He's kidding right." Everyone spoke in unison, "He's not kidding." "Wow, I mean how?" "Let's just say I have a few friends that work in the department who sensed that I wasn't happy with my role as an engineer. So with their help, here I am," Roy beamed. "That's great, Partner!" Suddenly a frown crossed Johnny's face . "What's wrong?" Roy asked with concern. "I suppose with your return I don't get to drive the squad anymore." Johnny replied looking hopeful. The room erupted in laughter. In truth, to Johnny, driving the squad was insignificant. He was just happy to have his best friend back by his side as his partner once again. Author's Note: After watching the promotion for the very first time back in September. Yes the first time. This idea popped into my head.
