Johnny arrived at the station. He entered the locker area and saw Roy.  Roy had his foot propped on the bench and he had just finished tying his shoe.  "Hi Johnny.  How was your days off?"

Johnny yawned and said, "Fine Roy, other than I didn't much sleep last night."

"Why not?" Roy questioned, as Johnny started to get into his uniform.

"Oh, the neighbor's kept me up last night."

"How did they manage that?"

"Well, first they came in late and slammed their door. It was about 1:00 a.m.  Then I just got back to sleep and they pounded on my door."

"What was the problem?" Roy asked.

"Actually nothing much," Johnny said.

"Well, aren't you going to tell me?" Roy asked, after a long silence.

"Tell you what Roy?" Johnny asked, as he yawned again.

"Why they were pounding on your door," Roy said.

"Oh that.  Well, they just wanted to know if I was home."

"What for?" Roy asked.

"Just in case they needed me. They had relatives in from Seattle and one of them wasn't feeling too well."

"What did you tell them?" Roy asked.

"I just told them that I was home and to call me if they needed me. But I guess they knew that I was home when I answered the door," Johnny said and yawned once again.

"Yeah, guess so.  Did you have to go over there?" Roy asked.

"No, actually they came back and pounded on my door at 3:00 a.m. and told me that he was better. He had a stomachache and it got better after he rested for a while. I couldn't go back to sleep after that, so I just stayed awake until time to get ready."

"You have some strange neighbors Johnny."

"Yeah, I guess I do."

Roy looked at Johnny's chin.  "What did you do to your chin?" Roy asked, as he saw the Band-Aid.

"Oh, I cut myself shaving this morning," Johnny said as he finished dressing.  He looked at Roy as he patted the pocket of his shirt. "Have you seen my
green pen anywhere?"

"No, I haven't seen it Johnny," Roy said.

"I can't function well without my pen Roy," Johnny said. He searched his locker for the pen.

"Well, how about a cup of coffee to get you started this morning Junior?  I'll help you look for the pen later."

"I guess so.  Coffee would help me wake up," Johnny said.

"Let's go get some then," Roy said. They both walked to the kitchen area.

Johnny reached up into the cabinet for a cup and Chet yelled,
"HEADS UP! CATCH JOHNNY!"

Johnny turned around abruptly and missed the baseball Chet had thrown to him. It hit him on the arm and Johnny struck his head on the corner of the cabinet door.
"OUCH!" Johnny shouted loudly. He put his hand to his forehead. "CHET, WHY DID YOU DO THAT?"  Johnny shouted.

"Sorry Pal," Chet said. "I was just trying to see how good your reflexes were for the game."

"What game?" Johnny asked. "The baseball game I'm setting up with Station 8."

"Who said that I even wanted to play?" Johnny asked.

"Everybody wants to play in this game Johnny. The losers buy the other team lunch," Chet said enthusiastically.

"Well, I don't want to play."

"Suit yourself pal. But you don't know what you're missing," Chet said.

"I do if you're pitching," Johnny said.

"Hey Roy, how about you. Do you want to play?" Chet asked.

"No, I don't think so Chet," Roy said, as he saw Johnny put his hand back up to his head.

"Let me take a look at your head," Roy said. Roy looked at Johnny's head and said, "Well, I'll wash it off and put a Band-Aid on it for you. It's just a scratch."

Cap came into the kitchen and said, "Good morning everyone."

"Hi Cap! Want to play in a baseball game against Station 8?" Chet asked.

"No Kelly, I'm too busy for that."  He looked at Johnny as Roy was putting a Band-Aid on Johnny's head.  "What's the problem Johnny?" Cap asked.

"Chet hit me with a baseball Cap," Johnny replied.

"Kelly did you do that?" Cap asked.

"I didn't hit him in the head Cap. I hit him on the arm and he hit his head on the cabinet door. It was an accident."

Cap walked over to Johnny and asked, "You all right Gage?"

Johnny looked at his arm and said, "I guess so Cap. It's bruised, but not broken. I'll put some ice on the knot."

Cap turned to Chet and said, "Play with the ball outside from now on pal."

"Sure Cap, I said that I was sorry.  I guess the game is off if no one wants to play," Chet said. "Are you guys sure…"

"NO!"  Cap, Johnny and Roy exclaimed loudly in unison.

"All right then, I get the message. No need to yell," Chet said.

Marco and Mike came into the kitchen. "Morning," Mike said.

Marco looked at Johnny.  He saw the Band-Aids on his chin and head.  He noticed that he was holding ice on his arm.  "What happened to you?"

"Gage was a victim of Chet's bad pitching," Cap said.

"Hey, has anybody seen my
green pen?" Johnny asked.

"No, not me," Chet said.

"I haven't seen it," Marco said.

"Where did you have it last?" Mike asked.

"If I knew that, it wouldn't be lost would it!" Johnny replied.

"Guess not," Mike said with a grin.

"It'll show up somewhere pal, just use a different one until you find it," Cap said.

"Can't do that Cap, it's my lucky…"

"I brought doughnuts," Marco said, as he interrupted Johnny.  He handed Johnny a doughnut. "Here maybe this will make you feel better. It has cream inside."

"Thanks Marco," Johnny said. Johnny bit into the doughnut and whipped cream squirted out all over his shirt.
"WILL YOU LOOK AT THIS!" Johnny shouted.

"Well, go change pal, before we get a run," Cap said.

Johnny left to go change his shirt. He put his hand on his locker handle to find that Chet had put oil on it.
"CHET!" Johnny shouted.

Cap went into see what Johnny was yelling about.
"KELLY!" Cap shouted.

Chet came around the corner. "Somebody call me?"  Chet asked.

"Yeah pal, what's the meaning of the vegetable oil on the locker handle?" Cap asked.

"Uh, what makes you think that I did that?" Chet asked. "I don't have any vegetable oil."

"Who else?" Johnny asked.

"Well, don't blame this one on me pal, not until you can prove that I did it," Chet said.  He shook his head and picked up the freshly oiled leather ball glove from the bench and walked outside.

Johnny washed his hands and changed his shirt. He came into the kitchen again. Cap said, "Johnny, would you put this notice on the bulletin board for me? I'm going out to talk to Chet."

"Sure Cap," Johnny said, as he took the notice.

"Anybody know where the stapler is?" Johnny asked.

"It's in the Cap's office, I suppose Johnny," Roy said.

Johnny searched the top of Cap's desk. He moved a stack of papers and they all fell onto the floor. After he picked the up all the papers, he tried to open the top drawer of Cap's desk and discovered that it was stuck. It would only open a little.  He reached his right hand into the drawer to remove what was making the drawer unable to open all the way and finally found the stapler. He grabbed it and the stapler closed on his finger.
"MAN!" Johnny shouted. He looked and saw the staple in his finger. Roy came in to see what had happened.

"What's wrong?" Roy asked.

"Oh, I got a staple in my finger is all," Johnny said.

Roy looked and said, "Guess we need to go to Rampart and have them get it out. It looks like it's in there pretty good."

"Roy, I don't think that's necessary."

"Well, I do," Roy said, as Captain Stanley came into his office.

"You do what Roy?" Cap asked.

"Johnny got a staple imbedded into his right index finger here. I think it's best that we go to Rampart and let them get it out for him," Roy said.

"I don't think that's necessary Roy," Johnny said again.

"Do what Roy says pal," Cap said.

They got into the squad and went to Rampart and returned about thirty minutes later.

"Well is he going to make it?" Cap asked when they came back.

Johnny had a Band-Aid on his right index finger. Johnny said, "It's nothing Cap. They got it out and everything is fine now. Good thing my tetanus shot is up to date."

"Hey Johnny, help me put this poster up will you?" Marco asked.

"Sure Marco," Johnny replied.

He went into the locker area. Marco had a small hammer and a tack. "Is this straight?" Marco asked, as he started to hit the tack.

"No, not at all Marco. Give me the poster and you look," Johnny said. He took the hammer and the tack.  He straightened the poster and held the tack between his left index finger and thumb. "How's this?"

"Looks great Johnny," Marco said.

Johnny raised the hammer and brought it down hard toward the tack.
"OW!" Johnny shouted.

Cap, Roy, Mike, and Chet came into the area. "What happened?" Cap asked.

"Well, Cap, Johnny hit his thumb with a hammer," Marco said.

"Are you okay, Gage?" Cap asked.

"Yeah Cap, I'm fine," Johnny said.

"Let me look at your thumb," Roy said.

"It's fine Roy, Just a little cut and a knot. I'll just put some ice and a Band-Aid on it.  It'll leave a bruise, but it'll heal," Johnny said, as he shook his thumb.

"Are you sure you didn't break it?" Roy asked

"Yeah, Yeah, I'm sure, really Roy, it's fine."

"All right then," Roy said, as Johnny went to get a Band-Aid.

"Johnny we need to change the oil on the squad today, don't forget," Roy said when Johnny returned.

"May as well do that now," Johnny said.

They went into the bay and Johnny said, "I'll get the oil filter off of it."  He raised the hood of the squad and got the toolbox while Roy got the oil and oil pan.  Johnny opened the toolbox and removed a large heavy wrench and laid it on the edge of the open toolbox.  He removed the oil wrench and knocked the large wrench off of the edge, which caused the wrench and toolbox to fall onto Johnny's foot.
"OW! THAT HURT!" Johnny shouted.

"What now?" Roy asked.

"Oh a wrench and toolbox fell on my foot," Johnny said.

"Well, is it broken?" Roy asked.

"No, I don't think it is Roy. But it sure hurts," Johnny said.

After they got the oil changed. Roy looked at Johnny as he limped around the squad.  "Sit down," Roy said.

"What for?" Johnny asked.

"I'm going to look at your foot," Roy said.

"I'm fine Roy."

"Then why are you limping?" Roy asked.

"Oh all right, if it will make you happy," Johnny said, as he sat down on the bench.

Johnny removed his shoe and sock. Roy looked at his foot and said, "Well, it's already bruised and a bit swollen. It doesn't look as if it's bad enough to be broken, but… "

"Is that all you're going to do?" Johnny asked.  "Tell me that it's bruised and swollen?"

"Actually we really should go to Rampart and have it x-rayed. If you'd like, I'll get you some ice and you can elevate it until I get back," Roy said.

"Sure Roy, bring the ice. Or I guess I could limp in there and get it myself," Johnny said.

"You sit still Junior, I'll be right back," Roy said, as he left to get the ice.

Cap came in and saw Johnny sitting on the bench with his shoe and sock off. "Well just what have you done now pal?"  Cap asked.

"Oh nothing Cap. Just dropped a large wrench and toolbox on my foot," Johnny said.

"Well, go get it x-rayed," Cap said, as Roy came in with the ice.

"What do you think Roy?  Does he need to have it x-rayed?"

"Well Cap, we can't tell if it's broken without one. It's bruised and starting to swell quite a bit."

"I don't need an x-ray. Really Cap. Don't you think I'd know if it were broken?" Johnny asked.

"Take him for an x-ray Roy, just to be sure," Cap said.

"But Cap…" Johnny said.

"You heard me Gage!" Cap said.

Johnny and Roy got into the squad and went to Rampart. They returned forty minutes later.

"Well, what did the Doc say?" Cap asked.

"It's not broken, just bruised," Roy said.

The claxon went off. "Squad 51, man injured in fall from tractor, 2718 Scottsville Farm Road. Two seven one eight Scottsville Farm Road, Cross Street, Cliff Drive. Time out 10:15.

Johnny, Roy and Cap hurried to the bay.

"KMG 365" Cap said, as he keyed the mike. As soon as Johnny and Roy donned their helmets, Cap handed the address to Roy and he passed it to Johnny.

Johnny reached in his pocket for his pen and said, "Roy, I need to borrow your pen."  Roy handed Johnny his pen and when Johnny finished writing he handed it back to him. Roy turned the lights and siren on and headed out the garage door.

Part 2

Roy pulled onto Scottsville Farm Road and he heard, "Cancel squad 51."  Roy turned the siren off.

"I'll find a place to turn around here somewhere," Roy said.

Johnny saw a young girl caught in a barbed wire fence. "Look Roy, over there!" Johnny said, as he pointed to the girl. Roy called it in to dispatch.

Roy pulled up beside the fence.  Johnny and he got out. They saw a bike lying against the fence and a young girl about twenty years old bent over in between the barbed wire fence. "Need some help?" Johnny asked.

"Please, I seem to be caught on this barbed wire.  I was riding my bike and my scarf blew off. I reached into the fence and got it and I got stuck like this. Please hurry and get me out of here, I'm afraid I'm going to be cut," the girl said.

"I'm Johnny Gage, this is my partner Roy DeSoto. We're paramedics with the L. A. County Fire Department. You are going to be fine now. Just don't move."

"I'm Sandy Rollingsworth.  Now do you mind getting me out of here?"

"Are you hurt?" Johnny asked.

"No, I'm not hurt at all. I'm sure I'm just caught.  Please hurry, I am uncomfortable," Sandy said.

Roy walked up to the fence. "I got it Roy," Johnny said. Johnny tried to carefully reach around the barbed wire to untangle her shirt. His shirt became tangled in the barbed wire and he tore it getting loose.

"Need some help partner?" Roy asked.

"No, I'm fine," Johnny said.

"Could you please just hurry?" Sandy asked.

"O.K. just hold still now," Johnny said, as he finally got a hold of her shirt. He gently pulled it off of the wire being very careful not to cut his fingers.  "I think that does it," Johnny said. She jerked up quickly and knocked Johnny's arm hard into the barbed wire fence as she climbed away from it.

"Thanks a lot fellows!" Sandy said. She hurriedly got on her bicycle and rode off.

Johnny looked at his arm. It was bleeding quite a bit.  Roy said, "Well, come on get into the squad partner."  Johnny walked to the squad and sat in the cab. Roy got a dressing and put it on Johnny's arm. "It's going to need stitches Johnny."

"Yeah, I think so too Roy," Johnny said.

Roy called Dispatch to let them know that he was taking Johnny to Rampart.

Part 3

Roy and Johnny walked into Rampart. Doctor Early saw Johnny. "What did you do to your hand Johnny?"

"Well Doc, me and a fence didn't see eye to eye," Johnny said.

"Come into treatment four Johnny and I'll take a look at it for you," Dr. Early said.

Roy stopped to get a drink of water. Dr. Brackett saw him.  "Hi Roy, How are things going?"

"Alright, I guess," Roy said.

"Did you bring in a patient?" Kel asked.

"Yeah, Johnny," Roy said.

"AGAIN!" Kel said loudly.

"Yeah, again Doc," Roy said.

"What's wrong this time Roy?"

"We were on a run that was cancelled and Johnny saw this girl who needed help and well, to make a long story short, he cut his arm on barbed wire," Roy said.

"I'll go check on him. What room is he in?" Kel asked.

"Four with Dr. Early," Roy said.

"Come on in Roy," Dr. Brackett said, as he held the door open for Roy. "How's it look Joe?" Dr. Brackett asked.

"Not too bad. I put four stitches in it."

Johnny and Roy talked to Dr. Early and Dr. Brackett for a few minutes while Joe bandaged Johnny's hand.  When Dr. Early finished they left the treatment room and got into the squad and went back to the station.

Part 4

They walked into the kitchen.

"Well, how's the hand?" Cap asked.

"Oh, it's all right I guess, it only took four stitches," Johnny said.

"Doctor Brackett also said that the next time a wing is added to the emergency room they were going to have a room set aside just for Johnny and call it the Gage Room," Roy said, as he laughed.

"Yeah, he was funny all right. I didn't want to go have my foot x-rayed earlier.  I told you that it wasn't broken, I'm not even limping on it much anymore. And it wasn't my idea to go and have the Doc take that staple out of my finger," Johnny said. "This is the third time I've been there today."

It thundered and started raining hard. "Man, would you listen to that downpour," Chet said.

"Yeah, it's really coming down," Mike said.

"What's for lunch Marco?" Johnny asked.

"It's Chinese. It's almost done. Want to help me with the pan fried rice?" Marco asked.

"Sure", Johnny said.  He walked over to the stove and turned the fire up a bit.

"Don't turn the fire up too high," Marco said.

"I won't, I know what I'm doing Marco."

Johnny picked up a lid from the pan and slightly burned his wrist with it.
"OUCH!" Johnny shouted. He ran cool water on it.

Marco looked at Johnny.  Johnny said, "I'm all right Marco. See!" He showed Marco his wrist.  It was slightly red. Marco shook his head. Johnny turned the heat down under the rice.

The claxon went off. "Station 51, tractor trailer truck overturned on the East bound lane of Ventura Freeway exit 107. Eastbound lane of Ventura Freeway, exit one zero seven. Time out 11:45."

Marco shut everything off on the stove and Mike, Chet, and Marco grabbed their turnout coats and helmets and got into the engine. Johnny and Roy got into the squad.

"KMG 365," Cap said. He handed Roy the paper with the address on it. Roy passed it to Johnny.  Cap grabbed his turncoat and helmet and hurriedly went in front of the squad and climbed into the engine.

Johnny reached for his
green pen. He remembered that it wasn't there. "Uh Roy, can I borrow your pen?" Roy handed Johnny his pen and after Johnny used it, he handed it back.  Roy pulled out of the station behind the engine. Both vehicles had the lights and sirens working and were traveling quickly toward the scene.

Part 5

The engine and squad pulled up and the crew noticed an overturned semi truck smoking slightly.  There were chickens running everywhere.

"Marco you and Kelly grab a reel line," Cap said.

Johnny and Roy took their equipment from the squad and headed toward a car with a smashed fender and hood. Vince pulled up as Johnny walked by and the police car.  Vince ran the car through a puddle of water and splashed water all over Johnny.  He got out of the Police vehicle.

"Sorry Johnny," Vince said.

"Sure Vince, no problem, I should have expected it," Johnny said, as he looked down at his soaked pants and shoes.

Two boys about age seven and eight jumped out of the car and started fighting.
"HEY, NOW QUIT THAT!" Johnny shouted. Vince went to talk to the truck driver. Johnny tried to break the kids up and one of them bit him. "OUCH! NOW STOP IT!" The other kid kicked him. "OUCH! QUIT IT!" Johnny shouted. The younger one pulled Johnny's hair as he bent over to set his equipment down. "LET GO OF MY HAIR!"

Roy came over and said, "Johnny, why don't you check the lady out. All I got from her was her name. It's Mrs. Fielding. I'll take care of these kids."

"Gladly!" Johnny said. Johnny walked over to the elderly lady in the vehicle and opened the driver side door. He said, "Ma'am I'm Johnny Gage. I'm a paramedic and I'm going to take a look at you."

Mrs. Fielding said, "You most certainly am not going to take a look at me. I'm those boys grandmother and I'm responsible for them. Now move out of the way."

"Ma'am, perhaps you should just stay in the car and let me check you out. It's raining out here and you might get…" Johnny said.

"OUT OF MY WAY SONNY!" Mrs. Fielding shouted.  She pushed the door into Johnny as she got out of the vehicle.

Johnny backed out of the way and grabbed his ribs where the door had hit him.  She got out of the car and Johnny could see that she had chill bumps as she reached for her umbrella.

"Ma'am are you cold?" Johnny asked. She turned and hit him on the head with her umbrella.

"OLD! HOW DARE YOU CALL ME OLD!"

"No ma'am, I didn't say old, I said…" Johnny said, as Mrs. Fielding stomped off toward her grandchildren.

Roy came over to Johnny and said, "How is she?"

"I guess she's all right. She won't let me examine her. How are the kids?"

"They are fine," Roy said.

Vince came over to Johnny and Roy and asked,  "Any injuries?"

"No, not with the kids and the lady won't let us examine her. I'll go check on the driver of the semi," Roy said.

Vince began talking to Mrs. Fielding. Johnny got her to sign a release form while Roy checked the driver of the semi and found him to be all right.

Roy and Johnny looked and saw Chet, Marco, and Mike chasing the chickens trying to catch them and put them back into their cages. Johnny and Roy decided to help. Johnny picked a chicken up and it pecked him on the hand. Chet picked one up and it scratched and pecked him on his hand. Roy picked one up and it pecked him on the arm. Mike fell chasing one and injured his foot. Marco picked one up and it got away from him hitting him in the nose causing it to bleed.
"ALL RIGHT! ENOUGH!" Cap shouted as another semi pulled up beside the wrecked one. "Let's leave this to the experts."  He noticed Johnny holding his side. He looked at his crew and said, "Everyone is going to Rampart to be checked out now."

Moans and groans of "Oh Cap!" were heard among the crew.

"You heard me, now let's get going," Cap said.

Everyone was checked at Rampart and sent back to duty.

Part 6

They returned to the station.  Johnny felt something in the seat of the squad poking him in the back. He reached into the cushion and pulled out his
green pen. "HERE IT IS ROY!" Johnny shouted as he held his pen up in the air. He quickly stuck it in his pocket. "Things have to get better now," Johnny said, as he grinned.

"I sure hope so Johnny," Roy said.

He got out of the squad and went into the kitchen. "Hey everybody, I have good news. I found my
green pen in the squad," Johnny said. He walked over to the coffeepot and poured a cup of coffee and started whistling.

"Pour me one partner," Roy said.

Johnny poured the coffee and handed Roy a cup. He looked at the lunch still on the stove and said, "Doesn't look like this is going to be very good."

Marco said, What about lunch Cap?"

"We'll order out I guess Lopez," Cap said. "While Marco is taking orders, I want everyone to sit down while I review the morning."

Everyone sat down and looked at Captain Stanley. Cap said, "Now this is what I have on my report so far for today.  We have had a run to an over-tuned semi and several injuries; Marco had a nosebleed, Mike sprained his ankle. Roy injured his hand, Chet injured his arm, and Johnny has had numerous injuries to include his latest injuries, a bump on the head and bruised ribs.  I suggest that we try to do better this afternoon. Hopefully our luck will change."

"Oh I'm sure it will Cap, now that Johnny has found his
green ink pen," Roy said with a smile.

Chet looked under the table.

"What you looking for pal? Did you lose something?" Cap asked.

"Yeah Cap. As a matter of fact, I did."

"Are you going to tell us what you lost or keep us in suspense Chet?" Johnny asked.

"Yeah, I'll tell you if you really want to know pal," Chet said as he looked in his pockets.

Everyone sat watching Chet. "Well, what is it Kelly?" Cap asked.

"Has anybody seen my lucky Rabbit's foot?" Chet asked.

"Oh brother!" Cap exclaimed.

Everyone laughed.
